Match Trivia
Rangers regained top place in the League table by defeating lowly Dunfermline Athletic at East End Park, and their winning margin was deserved. The three Ibrox goals were registered by Fleming. Rain fell incessantly, and the pitch was soon churned into mud. As a result, mistakes on both sides were plentiful. Dunfermline’s goal was bombarded early. Cairns and Morton sparkled, but it was an Archibald centre that enabled Fleming to shoot the opening goal. Dour defence by the Fifers kept the lively Rangers team going further ahead. At the other end Skinner missed a chance when Ireland miskicked. Then Moyes had to run out to blank Williamson, which he did. Rangers came again and Morton struck an upright, but Dunfermline once more asserted themselves. Lister was given an easy opening by Callaghan, but he lost it. Dunfermline were prominent soon after the interval. Moyes saved good shots from Williamson and Jack before Callaghan scored a beautiful shot. Five minutes had gone. Rangers retaliated, and nice play by Meiklejohn and Archibald produced a chance which Fleming promptly accepted. Stevenson had to retire, and Hers went into goal. Rangers excelled in the closing stages, and Fleming counted again after Meiklejohn had hit the crossbar with a terrific drive. Rangers’ best were McCandless, Meiklejohn, Fleming, Cairns and Morton. Dunfermline’s outstanding performers were Wilson, Bain, Williamson and Callaghan
