Match Trivia

Dundee were soundly defeated by Rangers whose victory dispelled the belief that Dens Park is a ‘bogey’ ground for them. There was no doubting the superior skill and tactics of the Ibrox team on an afternoon of adverse weather. Rain poured steadily through out the game, as it had done all forenoon, and in such conditions, one felt sympathy for the players. Everything considered it was a really interesting game, with Rangers revealing the better football and thrust when attacking. Rangers evidently had not forgotten last season’s defeat at Dundee, which blasted their championship hopes, for they opened in whirlwind fashion and were a goal ahead within a minute. Some nice, combined play between Meiklejohn and McPhail led to a pass to English, who failed to connect with the greasy ball. Morgan miskicked and McNab attempted to kick into touch. He, however made a bad clearance, leaving Smith in possession and the winger beat Marsh with a low shot. Dundee were staggered at this quick score, which if somewhat lucky, was well taken, gradually they recovered and a McNab free kick was cleared by Simpson. But Rangers were setting the pace, their smart positional play, crisp passing, and strong shooting, showed that they were on their best form. McPhail was putting in some powerful work and was not afraid to shot. The Dundee defence was kept busy, and Marsh saved grandly a fierce low drive by Marshall. The keeper, in a Rangers raid found himself harassed by English and Marshall on the goal-line, and relief was only brought by a free kick. Dundee were attacking spasmodically, but one of these attacks gave Rangers defence some concern before Campbell shot over. Then a goal for Rangers, deserved though unexpected in its manner – a Meiklejohn-McPhail movement again. McPhail gave to Smith, awaited the winger’s cross, and from thirty yards out beat Marsh with a shot that the keeper just failed to reach at the corner of the bar – a typical McPhail goal. Hamilton had a fine save when he cleared from Blyth with Robertson in attendance. Both teams changed their rigout at the interval, Dundee reappearing in red jerseys and Rangers in white with dark blue hoops. During the second half Rangers continued to dominate the game, and after twenty-eight minutes Smith cut in and beat McNab and Marsh in turn. After this play deteriorated, several players showing inclination to use their weight unnecessarily. Eleven minutes from the end Blyth was ordered off following a bad tackle on McPhail, who was injured and finished the game limping at outside-left with Smith inside. Dundee were best served by Marsh and the backs, while McCarthy kept a good hold of English. Their forwards were poor. Rangers’ stars were Gray, Meiklejohn, McPhail and Smith, but the entire tem played well. Smith on his display should be kept at outside-left. Blyth was sent-off after 79 minutes
