Match Trivia
You may rub your eyes at his result and might even have been rubbing them harder. The score board does Rangers no injustice whatever. Indeed, I ask you to believe they got off lightly. In the closing stages they were stampeded, and the score might have mounted almost to double figures. This is no exaggeration, but a simple statement of fact, Baxter squandered a penalty kick, missed two other pinches and Coats followed suit. Yes, Dundee should easily have had three more goals. But it was bad enough without that for Rangers. They have no back door through which to escape criticism. The team they put on the field was their own responsibility, and it was outplayed fore and aft. Even the tonic of the first goal rather against the run of play, failed to inspire this queer Rangers team. Venters got an easy passage through the defence, but Dundee closed the openings afterwards. Dundee came into their own three minutes later and were ahead in three minutes more, Baxter concerting a penalty kick and Coats shooting a judicious goal. It was becoming more obvious every minute that Rangers were being outplayed in defence. The wing half-backs did little to help them, and a totally unbalanced forward line could not pull the pressure off. Dundee struck the vital blows. Two goals with two minutes about five minutes from half-time Baxter and Coats again being the marksmen. I would prefer to say no more about this Rangers team other than that it will not do on this form. It was defective in every division. On the other hand, Dundee merit all praise. The young half-backs fairly won their laurels. McMenamy and Boyd looked international class, and Coats was a perfect pest, buzzing around Rangers defence. Boyd capped a great display with a splendid goal a minute from time, Baxter previously having made the total five from a rebound off the post through a Coats header. Rangers have much to ponder over, but for Dundee it was a game full of promise. The whole team played with great spirit, and not a little combined skill and the blend of youth and experience looks like paying dividends. Baxter missed a penalty. The last team to score 6 goals against Rangers in the league was Celtic in 1895-96
