Match Trivia

Fred McDiarmid, Dundee’s popular left half-back, who rendered able service to his club, received his benefit last night, when a friendly match took place at Dens Park between Dundee and Rangers. There were about 4000 spectators present. The weather conditions were ideal, but neither team was at full strength. Nevertheless the match proved of a highly interesting character. It was a triumph for the Rangers. Their forwards, particular in the first half, played magnificent football, and the crowd loudly cheered their brilliant shooting and passing. McColl, Kyle and Alick Smith were in their glory. They never made a mistake, and it seemed as if there was nothing easier for them to accomplish than to walk through the Dundee defence. Of course, the Dundee men were completely off colour – Lamentably so, indeed – and the only men who made anything of a show were Webb and Dainty. In the second half, however, they improved, but at no period was their work marked by so much judgment and combination as that of their opponents. Tem minutes from the start McColl opened the scoring for the Rangers. The goal was a brilliant one, and Towns never had the ghost of a chance of saving the shot. Keeping up the pressure the visiting forwards danced round the home defence and Kyle put his team two on the lead with a great effort from twenty yards out. A few minutes later this player again distinguished himself by scoring and in the process of doing so he very smartly outwitted several members of the Dundee defence. The spectators showed their appreciation of this clever piece of play. It was a blue look-out for Dundee, and so disappointed were the crowd at the exhibition of their favourites that they urged on the Rangers to increase their score. Ultimately Dundee’s chance came, and the forwards getting away McLuckie succeeded in beating Sinclair. The visitors again dashed away, and Low all but scored. The fourth goal was not long in coming, however. McColl passed the ball to A Smith, who sent in a grand shot. Towns caught the ball, but cleared badly, and McColl banged it into the net. A minute later Webb almost beat Sinclair with a splendid shot. The score at half-time were :- Rangers 4; Dundee 1. Dundee opened the second half in more promising style, and after a few minutes play Webb scored a lovely goal from thirty yards out. By this time the crowd had arrived at the opinion that Webb was far and away the brightest forward on the Dundee side, and everybody felt that he gained for himself a place in the first eleven. His play during the remainder of the half justified this view, as frequently he passed the opposing backs and sent in several rattling shots which Sinclair had great difficulty in clearing. Gray scored a fifth goal for the Rangers, Towns muddling a rather simple shot. Shortly before time Fraser scored a third goal for Dundee. A game much in favour of the Glasgow team ended :- Rangers 5; Dundee 3
