Match Trivia

This important First Division League fixture was played at Dundee on Saturday, in presence of over 6000 spectators. Cold weather prevailed, and the field was hard and unsuitable for good play. At the outset Dundee had the wind and sun at their back. A brisk attack was maintained on the Rangers defence, but latterly Boyd and Barker carried the ball west, and a corner was secured. This proved fruitless, and after a tussle between Longair and McPherson, the Dundee again attacked, and the ball ultimately appeared to have been landed in the net, but the referee granted a goal kick. Still keeping up the pressure, several good shots were sent in by the home team, and on one occasion the Rangers custodian was attacked at the post with the ball in his arms. Latterly a hard shot from Sawers took effect, the success of the home team being greeted with loud and prolonged cheering. Resuming the Dundee again visited their opponenets territory, and re long Gilligan had registered a second point for his club. The Rangers now made strenuous efforts to recover their leeway, but they failed to penetrate the home team’s defence, and latterly the Dundee again carried the ball west, and from a shot by Sawers the Rangers narrowly escaped having their colours again lowered. Halftime sounded shortly afterwards with the scores – Dundee 2 goals: Rangers 0. Dundee again attacked in the second half, but they were soon repulsed and the strangers had a period of aggressive play. A corner was obtained but no advantage was gained from this. Later however the Dundee goalkeeper had several times to throw out, and ultimately a shot from McCreadie found its way into the net. The home club played hard for a third point, and although a number of corners were claimed by them they failed in their attempts to score. Before the whistle sounded the Rangers were hard endeavouring to equalise and Barrett was repeatedly called upon to save. No further goals were registered and the match ended – Dundee 2 goals: Rangers 1.
