Match Trivia
Notwithstanding the high reputation of the Rangers in the North, the attendance at Dens Park was probably the smallest of the season showing conclusively that the day of ‘friendly’ matches is past. Neither team was fully represented the Rangers being without N Smith, Robertson, Hamilton and A Smith. McPherson crossed to the left wing, while Dundee who called in the assistance of Turner, a back from Perth, were minus Mackay and McDiarmid. Play was very interesting, though with very little expenditure of energy on the part of the contestants. MacDonald opened Dundee register with a capital goal. Nearing to the close of the first half McDermott had to retire temporarily owing to an injury, and shortly afterwards Drummond sent the ball spinning through his own goal. This was immediately followed by a goal for Rangers, scored by Cameron from a sharp cross from Graham. Dundee led by 2 to 1 at halftime. Listless play characterised the re-opening, but after a deal of give and take play work, on which there was more science than heart, Speedie levelled the score. Robertson followed with a third for Rangers, and Longair headed through the fourth point against his side. The three goals were scored in about five minutes. This was more than Dundee had bargained for, and caused the laggards to waken up and give Dickie some work. The custodian was soon beaten and the game ended in the Rangers favour. The play throughout was principally remarkable for mistakes by the defenders, and the bouts between McPherson and Turner, the long-legged St Johnstone back, who seemed to think his special mission was figuratively speaking, to say the veteran Ranger, who in consequence must have taken a considerable portion of Dundee’s playing pitch home on his uniform. The Rangers gave if anything the sounder exhibition and for this deserved their win. For them the halves were the best division, while the palm on Dundee’s side was carried off by McDermott, McDonald, Longair and Sharp.
