Playing well within themselves Rangers took both points from Dundee at Dens Park last night by three goals to one. On outfield play the champions reserved to win by a bigger margin, but they were little better than Dundee in the scoring connection. Two of their goals were scrappy affairs. The first came in the 20th minute. A free-kick against Gilmour was sent goalwards, the backs muddled matters, and the ball, falling at McPhails feet, was promptly flicked past Marsh. The second goal come midway through the midway through the second half, when a ball, nicely placed by Nicholson from a corner, was first headed by McPhail and then Smith before finding the net. The other two goals were more spectacular. Half-an-hour of the second half had gone when Gilmour handles, and McPhail took the kick from 20 yards out. His shot beat Marsh all the way, striking a post on its roads to the net. Dundees one counter was a well-taken point from Troup, which was eight minutes before the end. In a game in which shooting seemed something of a lost art, the Rangers attack, which in the first half had McPhail on the right and McMillan on the left, was altered at half-time. Then big Bob returned to his own position. Bob and Archie got along nicely, and the left-wing pair showed cleverness, too; but Marsh was seldom tested. Dundee had only two real chances, both from Troup passes. OHare sent the first past, and Ritchie headed the second into Hamiltons hands. Marsh, injured in the second half, resumed after three minutes absence. Gilmour and Brown were beaten more than once by Smith, a live raider, who found his luck out. Davie Meiklejohn, as a left-back, was seldom tested by the weak Dundee right-wing. Yet Ritchie did better near to the close. Simpson, who held Campbell well, was very erratic in his passing. Rain fell throughout the match, which was attended by about 8,000 spectators.
