Match Trivia

The visit of the Rangers to Dens Park was marked by every sign of undiminished interest on the part of the football public; nearly 15,000 spectators witnessed a splendid game in fine weather. The Rangers started well, McColl testing Muir in the first minute, but Dundee had subsequently the better of the exchanges. And pressed severely. Newbigging kept a clever goal, and long shots were poured in upon him from all parts. The Rangers backs were not nearly so steady as the Dundee pair, and why Dundee failed to find the net in the first half is probably explained by the fact that the forwards invariably failed to close in upon Campbell and Jackson. Muir remained idle for a considerable time, and when Kivlichan did manage to slip between the backs, he shot badly. Fraser should have converted a cross from Webb, but at an open goal he kicked over the bar. There was no scoring at halftime. In the second portion the game was well contested, and the Rangers had a greater say in the distribution of the play. Muir got a lot to do, and did it well. On two occasions Alex Smith finished splendid runs with fast low shots, and Stark had a brilliant drive, which Muir had some difficulty in reaching. As a result of Webb’s forcing tactics Dundee succeeded in opening the scoring. McFarlane neatly trapped a pass from Webb, and tipped the ball to Cox, who gave Newbigging no chance. The Rangers railed for the equaliser, and pressed vigorously, only to find Dundee’s defence ready at every point. Jeffray, Dainty and Lee being especially fine. Russell added a second goal for Dundee after Fraser had tricked Campbell. The game, which was fast and pleasant, all through ended Dundee 2: Rangers 0. The total drawings amounted to £338
