Match Trivia

After a restrained opening in the game at Dundee, the pace waxed fast and forceful. Siege followed siege, and though it could not be said there was any testing of custodians, still there was much grand work, with Dundee claiming the lion’s share. Going hammer and tongs, Dundee fairly ‘rattles’ the Rangers’ backs, who were fortunate not to have their mistakes counted against their side. It was vile luck when Wyllie, after a great effort was just too late for a chance from Hogg, while a moment later Barbour scraped the post. After all this honest toil, it was quite a heart-break for the home lot when from a simple-looking breakaway, Stewart rammed home first goal for Rangers , but it was a rare strong drive that did it almost on the call of half-time. So far Dundee had excelled themselves in every way save in the essential of getting goals, and the question came to be could they last such a pace in the second half? Dundee restarted the business in purposeful fashion, but were driven back. After Lyall had had a turn Hogg was let off by Barbour, and gave Wyllie a hard chance, but the left winger hung too long, and was baulked. To the other end the Rangers meandered, got a corner, and again scored in simple fashion. It was Duncan who scored, and Paterson who planted the corner kick so well among the men. Thus Dundee were dished, and the doing of it was all the more creditable to Duncan, scoring he had just previously been under repair. Hendry next got an injury, but soon recovered. Then Skene got a knock, and the game generally degenerated until it was but a patch upon the earlier proceedings. Rangers became an easy first. All the early vivacity of the home lot disappeared. From a bright Tango the show degenerated into a sort of Dead March. Unfortunately Bennett came by an injury so serious that the services of a doctor had to be called to attend to his face. In the end Dundee were badly beaten, and so plain was the fact that not a murmur was heard from the crowd at the finish. It was a game of fits and moods. When in the mood, and that was throughout the entire first period, Dundee played as well as ever they did, although there were numerous failures in finishing, and this was really what gave the show away. Once they broke down they were not like the same lot, though it must be said the defence stood up well throughout, and had hard luck in being twice beaten. Lyall might have saved the first goal, but had no chance with the second, and Aitken and Thompson did splendid work. Indeed they were ahead of the Rangers pair, Thompson’s first appearance in the position giving excellent promise for the future. At half the Rangers may have had a slight advantage? If so it was entirely due to the slashing work of Logan, who was the outstanding figure on the field. But he was none too particular as to the order of his going, and narrowly escaped being penalised at a critical period of the game. Philip deserved a word of praise for his successful dealing with Reid. Coming to the forwards, it is a curious tale that has to be told. In the first half the Rangers had about one-fifth of the chances that went to the home five yet always gave the impression of being most dangerous on account of the cleverness of their attacks. With all their chances the Dundee forwards failed as opportunists for quite a sheaf of goals might have been got in the first half. Steven was about the pick. Of course, this applies almost entirely to the first half, for in the second the work was poor indeed
