Match Trivia
Scottish League game at Dens Park Dundee before 15,000 spectators. Goal-scorers :- Steven for Dundee and Reid for Rangers. The game at Dundee was very keen one indeed, and a hard struggle was witnessed. Dundee were without McDonald, who is on the injured list. Steven going to outside left, while in the Rangers’ team Bowie and Cairns changed places. The Dens Parker had the benefit of the wind in the first period, and in the opening stages their forwards gave the Rangers’ defence much work to do. A couple of corners were awarded Dundee in rapid succession, but neither was turned to account. McCulloch was early prominent, as was also Hogg, who with a little more care might have converted the second corner. Kelso and Craig did nobly, particularly the latter who cleverly tackled and cleared when severely pressed by the Dundee forwards. Logan at half-back was strenuous in his efforts to get at the home goal, and assisted by Bowie, subjected the Dundee rear to some pressure. Burns was outstanding in his defensive work and held Bennett and Bowie well in check. The latter eventually got through and shot ‘cutely, but Balfour saved well. Logan was seen in his best form, and the manner in which he kept the Rangers’ forwards supplied with the ball brought forth many cheers. Towards the interval Hogg was in the act of shooting from close quarters when he was successfully tackled by Logan. A minute later the Rangers’ centre half was injured, but he soon rallied. Ends were changed without scoring. The advantage of the wind probably was the cause of the Rangers starting the second half with great determination. Their forwards were quickly round the Dundee goal, but the home defence rose to the occasion, and cleared numerous attacks. If anything, the Rangers were more methodical in their play, though the Dundee team displayed greater resource. Eventually the visitors did score. Reid got through, and although cleverly tackled, he managed to get the ball past Balfour with an angular shot from close range. The Dundee custodian had no chance of saving. The home team worked harder than ever after this, yet the Rangers were the more dangerous when they got in front of goal, which they did on several occasions. At last the Dens Parkers got the equaliser. It was the result of a clever bit of play, in which McCulloch was outstanding. The inside right was fouled and a free kick was awarded. Brown crossed the ball to Steven, who cleverly screwed the ball past Lock into the net. This success was loudly cheered by the home supporters. Play until the close was followed with even greater interest, both teams straining themselves to the utmost to get the leading point. Both defences, however, were found absolutely safe, and the whistle blew without further scoring. Outstanding in the Dundee team were Burns, McIntosh, Hutchison, McCulloch and Steven. Hogg at times good, but he was less deadly at goal then he might have been. Craig played a fine game for Rangers, as did also Logan and Bowie, Reid and Cairns
