Match Trivia

Rangers’ visit to Boghead made Dumbarton hum. There was a record crowd in the historic field, some ten to twelve thousand, and the occasion was further memorable with the local directorate in that they opened for the first time their new pavilion stand. The match undoubtedly was Rangers’, but it was not the walkover the score indicates. The Dumbarton side played a punishing game. Every section of the team took out of themselves all that was in, and the whole side gave its best display. It showed how well all tries to do when it is mentioned that a team which had not scored in the last five matches scored twice against the Light Blues. The Rangers eleven played delightful. The defensive lines were sound, and it was pretty to see the flying squad get off and centre on the mark. Both Morton and Archibald were well plied with balls, and while Cunningham was well held for a time, he was not to be denied. Chatton fouling Morton on the bye-line led to the first point. The Ranger sent over a dangerous ball, which was kicked back to Meiklejohn, who volleyed through. Morton scored a characteristic goal, fastening on to a pass forward and pushing through, giving Miller no chance. Just on the whistle Dumbarton came by their reward, Browning sending over for Fraser to convert. On resuming, Dumbarton swarmed round Robb, but they were sent away empty-handed, and then Rangers set to make the game their own. Archibald forced a corner off Till, and delivered a delightful ball, which Cairns met on the post and converted. Cunningham followed, taking a Morton cross on the run and heading through. Dumbarton got their second well into the second half, McDiarmid forcing the ball Rae to the centre, when Fraser caught the Rangers defence out, and managed to elude Robb with a pot shot. To Cunningham fell the fifth, along low shot which baffled Miller, Towards the close the game became all too strenuous, Dumbarton dying game
