Match Trivia
The return fixture between these two famous teams was played at Boghead, Dumbarton, fully 2000 spectators being present. The last time the two teams met the game ended in favour of the Rangers by two goals to one. The day was fine, but the wind was too strong to allow of a good game being played. Dumbarton won the toss, and the Rangers set the ball in motion against a strong wind blowing diagonally from corner to corner. McMillan returned, and Lindsay made a dash for the other end, but the backs returned the ball, and Lawrie made an invasion of Dumbarton territory. P Miller interfered, however and Lawrie’s shot was spoiled by him sending it past the side. Dumbarton secured a lot of corners now, but none of them proved of any use. The Rangers now came away finely, and the right wing entrusted the ball to Lawrie, who scored first for the Rangers by heading the ball past McAulay. Dumbarton soon equalised W Keir sending in a shot, which was converted into a goal in the scrimmage, which ensured. Dumbarton now pressed hard, but it was some time before an opening could be found. Lindsay however managed a second goal from an angular shot, and in a short space of time Jamieson had scored the third goal for Dumbarton. Haft time was drawing near, but before it came round two more were added to the Dumbarton score and at the end of the first portion they were in a majority of 5 to 1. Things were changed somewhat in the second half, and a considerable time elapsed are anything of note took place. Lawrie was again the first to score from a long shot, which McAulay seemed to think it was going past. Dumbarton retaliated and in a few minutes had the ball behind the goalkeeper, but one of the Rangers backs got behind Chalmers and kicked the ball out. Dumbarton claimed the goal but did not get it. Buchanan soon after scored the Rangers third goal, while Lawrie added a fourth, and before time was up the Rangers had registered a fifth, and the game thus resulted in a draw 5 goals each. The whole of the first half was the Dumbarton’s while the Rangers had the best of the last portion and made good use of the wind.
