Match Trivia
Although minus their three regular half-backs all on the injured list Dumbarton put up a great fight in the League match at Boghead last night against Rangers strongest eleven. And what is more, they well deserved the draw. The Ibrox officials were thoroughly satisfied with the result, as the point gained makes the League Championship a certainty. The light blues excelled in constructive and cohesive football, but their methods were no more successful than the whole-hearted, energetic efforts of the Boghead side. The game may be summed up as a continual series of end-to-end exchanges, in which the defenders came out on top. Neither goalkeeper was overburdened with work but Miller was oftener called upon than his vis-à-vis, and had to look lively in the first half to get rid of shots from Bowie, Paterson and Cairns, while a Walls express was stopped by the upright. Dumbarton forced several corners in the closing period, Walker fired a free kick at Robb which brought out the keepers clutching power, and Thom and Walker both missed a good scoring chance from a Scott Duncan centre. Of four sound and reliable backs, Manderson and Till were practically unbeatable. Cunningham was the hardest working and most successful Rangers middle-man, and in a forward division which seemed to be suffering from leg-weariness, Bowie and Cairns were the pick. Dr Paterson has seldom put so many ball behinds the goal. Raeside put in a power of work at centre-half for Dumbarton, and at forward Gordon was clever and elusive. The outside right repeatedly had the heels of Walls and sent across many fine balls. Bennett and McDiarmid gave of their best against their old clubmates
