Match Trivia

These two team who have not only this year but have for a few years past occupied such a prominent position in the football world met at Boghead. During the week excessive rain had soaked the ground but on Saturday the sun shone out brightly and the ground became dried up. The weather in the afternoon was all that could be desired and the prevalent anticipation of an excellent game induced five thousand to attend at Boghead to watch the play. Some fine play was shown on both sides in the first round but no scoring occurred. At the commencement of the second half of the game the Rangers played with much more determination if that was possible and soon had the leather at McAulay charge. Gossland had a smart run along the right wing but Hutchison who was playing a hard game returned the leather. A long kick from Brown (1) had a narrow escape of becoming effectual as Gillespie fell but was able to kick the ball behind before any one came near. Gossland had again a beautiful run the whole length of the field and passed everyone but his final kick was too high having struck the bar and passed over. A foul was given against Dumbarton who gave the Rangers an excellent chance but McGregor put the ball behind. Shortly afterwards as a result of a free kick in favour of Dumbarton a scrimmage took place in front of the Rangers goal which Heggie tried to clear but Keir sent in a long shot which however grazed the bar. The play was now of the most determined description. The forwards rushed from one end of the field to the other and were either turned by the backs or by the clever play of the custodians. The Dumbarton forwards had a combined run up the field when Brown (1) centred the leather to Lindsay who sent in a swift shot which Gillespie failed to stop. This, the first goal was obtained about seven minutes from time amidst tremendous cheering. The Rangers now made a very determined attempt to score and were soon at the Dumbarton goal but McAulay saved his charge and Lindsay got on the ball and carried up field and centred to Brown who carried it still further up and passed to the right to McKinnon who sent in a sharp shot which was effectual. This was only three minutes from time. The Rangers made an attempt to retrieve their laurels but failed and a very closely contested and excellent game ended in favour of Dumbarton by two goals to none. The players on both sides played a good game
