Match Trivia
What promised to be a keen and exciting game in the early stages turned into a complete flop after half an hour. Force of numbers was a contributing factor as Dumbarton lost Milne through an ankle injury midway in the first half. Yet the chief reason for Dumbartons downfall was not their depleted attack. It was the defence that let them down hopelessly in a fatal couple of minutes when Rangers scored two goals. On the other hand, the short-handed Boghead attack deserved great praise for their pluck and persistence. Time and again only Dawson stood between them and a goal, and once Gray preformed his famous clearing on the line act with Dawson well beaten by a shot from Shields. Rangers were four up at the interval, so the second half hardly counts. As a matter of fact, Rangers failed to increase their score, due to a mixture of poor shooting and grand goalkeeping by Wallace. Dumbarton richly deserved their late goal from Drysdale in the closing minutes, a virtual triumph over circumstances. Rangers restored Smith to centre-forward and his value in their victory cannot be overestimated. His hat-trick placed him head and shoulders above all the other forwards. Two of his goals were entire individual efforts. Smith goals came in 12,31 and 44 minutes and Waddell sandwiched in the other after half an hour. Rangers left-wing was unusually quiet when the game was being won and lost but Waddell and Duncanson were always lively
