Match Trivia

The return League fixture between these clubs was played at Dumbarton, and it was generally felt that the Rangers would not have much trouble in winning. Mitchell won the toss, and close to defend the east goal. Taylor was early in evidence by a fin run, but Drummond cleared strongly, and the Rangers left pair were immediately over the Dumbarton’s lines. The main feature of the opening passages was the splendid kicking of the Rangers backs, who both punted in beautiful fashion. The Rangers all over were playing very cleverly, and McLeod had to put in all he knew to save a long shot from Mitchell. A great scrimmage took place at McLeod’s toes, but luckily the ball came into position for Smith, and he kicked well our. Taylor made great efforts to get off, and Drummond falling at a critical moment almost let him away. A fin run between Taylor and Bell carried the ball well up. Johnstone was entrusted with the final kick, and though tackled by Gow, he coolly brushed past and beat Haddow seven minutes form the start. Smith was responsible for some fine defensive tactics, and he was mist successful in keeping Davie and McCreadie in check. Johnstone had a rousing run on the left, but Taylor, who got the pass shot softly. The Dumbarton youngsters were playing with a dash that was really surprising. Johnstone was showing grand play, and between him and Taylor, Haddow had a difficult shot to negotiate. The Rangers though very clever in the open, made few really good attempts at goal, and anything McLeod did get he saved without any trouble. McMillan was showing wonderfully for an old stager, and his kicking reminded one at times of his palmist days. A bad fluke by Smith gave the Rangers a corner, but Johnstone got the ball away and beat Marshall in a stiff tussle on the touchline. Gow and Drummond stopped several ugly rushes on the part of the home forwards. McPherson and Barker dribbled well up the left, and the latter got into a fairly good position, but shot high over the bar. A minute later the same couple executed a splendid run, and the former sent in a hot shot, which McLeod promptly kicked out. Mitchell tried a run on his own account, but his final shot brought forth derisive cheering. The Rangers at this point were having the larger share of the play, but the Dumbarton backs were playing really sterling defence. Hugh McCreadie put in some clever play on the touchline, but his parting kick sent the ball sailing over the bar. Thomson cleverly beat a run by Mitchell and then Gow put in a splendid long drive, which was quite as cleverly met by McMillan’s head. The visitors were making most determined attempts to ‘break their egg’, but McLeod clever fisted out and play was once again in midfield. Taylor and Sanderson essayed a run on the right, but they were pulled up. Clever play by Bell and Campbell threatened the Rangers goal again, but Drummond got his foot in the nick of time. Haddow immediately after had to run out to meet Taylor, and he was somewhat lucky in getting the ball. Nash beat back a dangerous attack at the other end, and the home men were running off again. Hands drew them up, but back they came again, and a hot one from Bell was very luckily blocked. Off the Rangers went again, but one of the Dumbarton halves put the ball back to McLeod, and it was amusing to see the whole of the Rangers forwards left standing when McLeod put the ball over their heads. Both goalkeepers were called upon, and they responded bravely, McLeod in particular defending brilliantly. The Rangers tried hard to get level before the interval, but they were unsuccessful and on retiring Dumbarton were leading by 1 goal to 0. The Rangers had a free kick when the game was restarted, but Smith nullified the advantage with a big return. The Dumbarton forwards were maintaining the good form of the first half, and Haddow had to handle out a long shot from Sanderson. The play considering the best was fast and well maintained, but the players were suffering from excitement. The Rangers increased their efforts but they again led to confusion among themselves. Both backs made for young Bell, as he dribbled up the centre, but he coolly got round them and scored a second goal amid great excitement. Several fouls were given again the Rangers for rough play, and their goal had some most miraculous escapes. Davie and McCreadie got away on the right, but McPherson missed the pass. Smith almost kicked the ball through his own goal, but the corner kick came to nothing. The Dumbarton men were showing superior play, and their incursions to their opponents ground were always dangerous. Bell gave Haddow a regular stinger, but he punted out cleverly. Time was nearing, and the Rangers were putting in all they knew, but the Dumbarton players kept their heads splendidly. A fin run, taken part in by the whole of the forwards, was capped by a splendid goal by Taylor amid cheers. Still the Rangers could not get away, on the contrary, their goal continued in imminent danger. McPherson got well down and looked likely to get in, but McLeod ran out and cleared in brilliant style. McPherson tried a fast shot immediately after, but the ball went over. Nothing further was accomplished, and the Dumbarton gained a grand victory by 3 goals to 0. This is the Rangers first defeat in the League competition this season.
