Match Trivia
On Saturday last the football season opened at Boghead, with the first League fixture between these two clubs. The weather from the spectator’s point of view was splendid, but for football playing was very exhausting. Dumbarton as is generally known returned to amateurism this season, and discussion was everywhere heard as to how they would show against the strong Glasgow club. After the kick off Rangers were first to become dangerous, Colquhoun having to hold a shot from A Smith. The visitors still kept before the home team’s goal, but were met with a spirited defence, and a mistake by Mathie let Dumbarton down the field. Saunderson shot for goal, and Murdoch who might easily have saved, let the ball into the net amid great enthusiasm. On the restart Rangers wakened up, and although they made determined efforts, they were unable to fins an opening. Dumbarton’s right wing changed the venue, and a rush was made for the Rangers goal, Stevenson by slipping missed a rare chance, and Saunderson getting possession of the ball sent in an easy shot, which Murdoch again bungled. Two goals up, and Dumbarton playing splendid game, made things look rosy for them. Dumbarton however, now slackened down, and the Rangers, still pegging at it, cane down the field in a cluster. Miller, while still a good bit from goal, sent in a beauty of a shot, which Colquhoun allowed to go past, Rangers there-by scoring their first point. Keeping at it, the visitors came away again, and Miller, who looked suspiciously offside, scored again. With the game equal, the play became somewhat exciting, but Dumbarton appeared to be somewhat fagged. The Rangers, on the other hand were going at it, and Barker soon added another point, while a minutes later he put on number four. Halftime – Rangers 4: Dumbarton 2. On resuming the Rangers at once settled down, A Smith opening the scoring after a few minutes play. Then followed a thorough bombardment of the Dumbarton goal, and but for the fine defensive game played by Thomson, other points would have been registered. Sinclair to at centre half was playing a genuine game, but for a while the pressure could not be relieved. A foul before the Rangers goal relieved matters. It was beautifully taken, and Boyle, while lying handy for Murdoch managed to tip it through. Dumbarton came away better now and Murdoch had some work to do. After fisting out a few likely shots the pressure was relieved. During this half Dumbarton for took their combination game, and played their old famous one of ‘ a kick and rush’, but they always failed before their opponents defence. Rangers on the other hand played a neat passing game – in fact, they indulged in this before the goalmouth much to their detriment. No more goals were scored, and the match ended – Rangers 5: Dumbarton 3.
