Match Trivia
The return League match between these teams was played at Dumbarton in summer-like weather, and before a moderate gathering of spectators. Boyle kicked off, and Dumbarton moved forward. Gibson relieved, and the Rangers commenced a siege which lasted several minutes, and in which Keir shone to advantage. A miss-kick by N Smith let three Dumbarton men clear off, but among them they bungled a glorious chance. Montgomery had to hold a hot one from Stevenson, then Barker raced off, but got mixed among several stripes. A corner to the Rangers was well placed by Barker, but Gardiner headed over. So far the Rangers had the best of it, but the play was listless and unexciting. Miller was pitting in a power of work for Dumbarton at back, and had the best of the exchanges with his old Vale friend. McLeod had to pick up twice, but he had ample time to save. Immediately after he preformed a very clever save. A foul to the Rangers, for no obvious reason, caused some trouble, but Thomson cleared. A similar concession to Dumbarton was well taken by Nash, but the Rangers packed their goal successfully. McCreadie than had a fine chance, but he shot, though a good one, passed outside, and an equally good effort by Cowan went over. The home defence was really their salvation, but the forwards were dangerous when they got away, and Gibson had to give a corner for safety. The Rangers were trying all they could, but the home backs would not be beaten. Making proper use of their opportunities, Dumbarton might have scored, but on the whole they were being outplayed. Several corners fell to the Rangers, but they could not improved upon. Dumbarton opened out the play, and made a splendid effort, but Montgomery saved in the nick of time. Campbell also had a try, which struck the wrong side of the net. Halftime – No goals. Immediately on restarting little Thomson made a grand attempt from half, but Montgomery cleared with a huge punt. The Rangers halves were feeding splendidly, Gibson had a grand try from back, and had McLeod been pressed he might have been beaten. The home men rushed the leather to the other end, and Montgomery had an anxious five minutes, but ultimately Hartley shot over. Miller twice turned the Rangers attack, then the Smiths spoiled a promising run by Campbell. Dumbarton closed in on the Rangers goal. A foul close in gave them a chance, but Thomson dallied with the ball, till a Rangers foot spoiled his kick. Coming on again with a rush, the home forwards looked like business. Gibson checked the progress of the ball, but dallied and Boyle robbed him and shot. Montgomery only partially cleared, and Campbell rushed in and banged the ball through amid tremendous cheering. With a goal to the good, the Dumbarton men did not relax their efforts, and the Rangers strove with equal determination to retrieve their loss. The Rangers had a foul a few yards out from the Dumbarton goal. Mitchell placed nicely, and Gardner should have scored, but missed widely. Then the home forwards made another dash for Montgomery, but were turned by Gardner just on the nick of time. Mitchell got the ball along a bit, and Gardner put a scorcher right into McLeod’s hands. Another of the same came a moment later, but both of them were cleverly negotiated. Dumbarton were again among the Rangers backs, but a foul off Craig stopped their career. The Rangers got down cleverly, and Barker dropped the ball on top of the Dumbarton net. Mitchell turned the Dumbarton attack, and off went the Rangers forward. Gardner let fly at McLeod, who just managed to get his toe under the ball, and sent it over his own bar. Barker put the corner kick behind. In the closing minutes the Rangers made desperate efforts to equalise, but all were unavailing, and they suffered their most unexpected defeat this season by 1 goal to 0. The Rangers have never won a League game at Dumbarton.
