Match Trivia
Tour of Germany - Another Rangers success falls to be recorded in Germany. Playing against a Dresden eleven the Scottish League Champions won by three goals to two. This was their hardest match so far. Smith scored twice and McPhail once. Thirty thousand people saw football played in difficult conditions. The weather was tropical, the ground hard as flint, and the light ball most difficult to control. Rangers finished good winners against a Dresden side who made strenuous efforts to draw the game. At half-time the Scots led two-one. Dawson and Gray were the stars. In the Scottish team, McDonald replaced Simpson, while Russell filled McDonalds position in the rear. Only occasionally did they show the fine combined play and excellent hard-work for which they are famed in this country. Their victory was due to their centre-forward, Smith who found two goals. By a lucky stroke he scored in the sixth minute the ball rebounding from the referees head, rolled in front of Smiths feet, and the centre-forward did the rest. Dresen equalised in the thirteenth minute from a combined movement. Following a thrilling solo effort by Smith. He swerved past the opposing centre-half, tricked both backs and scored the Rangers second goal in the 27th minute. A good chance of equalising again was missed by the German just before half-time, when the score was 2-1 in the Scotsmens favour. In the second half the German side combined well and pressed harder than previously. But after a few minutes McPhail scored with a clever header. The German side got their second goal in the 20th minute, but they did not get any opportunity to score, the ensuing play being very open.
