Match Trivia

Tour of Germany - Rangers continue their triumphal march. Yesterday at Bochum a local side were beaten in hollow fashion by five goals to nothing. All the Scots played brilliant football, football that delighted a crowded enclosure. Rain delayed the kick-off, which, however, stopped soon, but it had already spoiled the attendance, which barely reached 4000. To begin with play was even. But the fine combined play exhibited by the Scots and the magnificent use of their heads, was far too much for the selected German eleven. The Rangers thoroughly deserved their five-goal victory. Dawson kept a splendid goal. Gray was a grand back, and McPhail a wonder-working inside forward. The entire attack was something of a revelation. From the kick off the German team endeavoured to keep the game open, and with some success. But that seemed to be about the limit of their achievement, and only for one short period in the second half did they succeed in bringing off some likely rushes. Busch and Hundt, the backs, found themselves continually in such difficulties that the half-backs, Horn, Munzenberg and Keller, were practically confined to defence. The best all-round performance was put up by Horn, but Hohmann was the star. From the beginning the Scots showed themselves to be definitely superior to their opponents. The German inside forwards, Rohwedder and Rasselnberg stood almost the whole time behind the line in order to strengthen the defence. Not until the 31st minute was the first goal scored. After several skirmishes round the German fortress, English put the ball to McPhail, who sent in an unstoppable shot. The second goal followed quickly. Fleming raced down, and after a tussle with Hundt, held on to the ball and scored. Buschloh caught at the t greasy ball, which slipped from his hands. Half-time came with the score 2-0. In the second half the rain came on again and continued till the end. The Scots began to press header than ever, and soon the third goal was registered by English. Followed 15 minutes of German pressure. Corner after corner was taken, and several shots hit the posts or glanced off the cross0bar, but the Scots were not to be beaten owing to the magnificent show put up by Dawson. After this solitary German spurt, the Rangers attacked again. McPhail shot the fourth goal five minutes before the ned., and English the fifth after a straight run – this one minute before the final whistle
