Match Trivia

Tour of Germany - Rangers are still undefeated outside of Great Britain. In the opening match of their continental tour yesterday against the Berlin Club they more than upheld the prestige of Scottish football by returning a decisive victory. The Germans played strongly and showing some clever moves, in the first half prevented the Scots from setting down. Rangers scores were Smith (3), McPhail and Fleming. The weather was not too favourable. Rain fell, but there was an attendance of 30,000, who gave Rangers a splendid reception. “We are”, says a telegram from one of the party, “greatly enjoying out stay in Berlin”. The ground was very treacherous, and the players had great difficulty in keeping their feet. Play was scrappy throughout the first half. The Rangers took some time to settle down, and it was not until the second half that they showed something like their real form. During the opening stages, Kersei, the German left winger, was the outstanding man on the field, his neat dribbling and clever passes repeatedly drawing applause. Play was very open each goal being visited in turn. There was an exciting moment when, after five minutes, Riehl, the German goalkeeper, tipped Smith’s hot over the bar, and saved what seemed to be a certain goal. The Germans retaliated, and Dawson was compelled to run out to clear his lines with a mighty kick into the stand. Maintaining their pressure, the Germans were rewarded in the thirty-first minute, when Noack, the inside left scored with a brilliant shot, which flashed into the corner of the net with Dawson well beaten. The Scots had been obviously handicapped by the strangeness of their surroundings, but it was a different story when the game was resumed. The Rangers forwards, getting together well, began to attack in fine style, and Riehl was given plenty to do in the German goal. A brilliant run by McPhail, one of the bets individual efforts of the match, ended with the ball just going wide after the Scot had swept through the German defence. The second half was only three minutes old when Smith scored a remarkable goal. He shot from an almost impossible angle. In addition, the goal was covered by two defenders. Thereafter the Rangers forwards fired in shots from all angles. Riehl, who was perhaps the hero of the match, gave a brilliant display in the German goal. He made several fill-length saves, and once took the ball off the toe of a Scottish forward. It was only natural, however, that he should succumb under such a bombardment, and McPhail beat him to give the Rangers the lead. The Rangers were now definitely on top, the Germans being outmanoeuvred at almost every move. From one of many corners, Fleming increased the lead with a fine header into the corner of the net. The fourth and Fifth goals were scored by Smith who played a brilliant game at centre-forward. The fourth was scored almost immediately after a corner kick, and the fifth from a mell in the goalmouth. The Germans played pluckily, but they were handicapped by injuries. After playing a man short for most of the second half, another player was injured towards the close, and they finished the match with only nine men. Sokel, one of the injured, was replaced by Iwankawsli at the request of the Scottish captain, but he took was injured, and had to retire. The other injured player was Lemberger, who was knocked senseless.
