Match Trivia

Rangers got away with the points from Cowdenbeath, but they are getting no bouquets thrown at them. As a matter of fact, the display of the Ibrox sis was such that even a single point would have been a generous reward. They owed their win largely to the fact that Crosskey was not in his best trim. At least one of the goals ought never to have been scored. Crosskey had the ball in his hands but dropped it when Smith came barging in, with the result that the goal was left at the mercy of Morton. Over the game, Cowdenbeath were rather the better side. Their weakness lay in the failure of the inside forwards and in the fact that there was nobody in front to impart a steadying influence. Rangers went off with the wind behind them and took the lead after 17 minutes. Marshall slipped a nice pass through, and McPhail went after it and scored as Crosskey came rushing out. Cowdenbeath forwards made a good reply, Robertson getting in a hot shot to Hamilton, and Venters heading narrowly past from a centre by Stewart. Smith had the Fife goal at his mercy when McPhail shoved the ball forward, but he slipped at the critical moment and lost a chance. Near half-time Morton scored that goal I have already told you about. Again, the Fife men smartened under the reverse and Hamilton had to move himself to stop a header from Stewart. Then a penalty for hands came to cheer the Fife men up. Frame made a good job of it, and Rangers crossed over only one up. In the second half the Ibrox men occasionally came away with glimpses of clever passing, but it was seldom more than glimpses. Cowdenbeath did mot of the attacking at centre there was more punch about their attack. After 12 minutes Glancy struck an upright from a corner kick, and Robertson scored the equaliser. The Fife men ought not to have fallen behind again when 20 minutes from the end their defenders were badly at fault following a corner taken by Archibald and Smith was allowed to barge through with the winning goal. RangersÂ’ form was patchy and good patches did not often appear. Hamilton did his bit well, and Gray was the better back. Simpson put up a shout defence and Brown was the one half who showed to advantage as a real half-back. Marshall and McPhail were best of the forwards. The Cowdenbeath backs and half-backs all played very well, Frame being the outstanding man on the field. In front Stewart was in brilliant form, and Hamill also showed to advantage.
