Match Trivia
Cowdenbeath played just as well as they did when Celtic were at Central Park, on the occasion of the Rangers’ visit there yesterday under League auspices, and they deserved the single-goal victory they recorded. The conditions were miserable, rain falling all afternoon. Prior to the start the groundsmen prodded the pitch to allow the pools of water to escape. During the first half Cowdenbeath gave a splendid exhibition. All divisions were prominent and particularly the defence. Wright notched the goal that eventually won the points. In the course of a scramble following a Wilson corner-kick, Wright forced the ball through. At the interval the locals merited their lead; the play of veteran Willie Rankin and Pullar on the right wing had been a treat. If anything, the Rangers were the more aggressive side in the second half, but they were baulked by a gallant defence. Time and again the Ibrox forwards threatened to carry all before them, but always one or other of the ‘Cowden’ men would upset their schemes. None was more conspicuous than Hopewell. Murray also stood out very prominently. As it was, Cowdenbeath’s raids were usually more menacing than the Rangers’ concerted attacks, but they hadn’t a centre-forward who could finish well. Twice he was clean through, but he shot wildly the first time, then slipped and lost control on the nest occasion. Late on the Rangers became desperate Muirhead and Craig changed places. This brought about improvement, but the Fifer defenders were stonewallers to the end. Cunningham was the live wire of the losers’ attack. T Hamilton, Gray, Muirhead, Craig, Morton and Archibald were the other Ibrox men who stood out above their colleagues. Hopewell was the hero of Cowdenbeath. Splendid service was also rendered by Murray, McDonald, Frame, Conaboy, Rankin, Pullar and Wright
