Match Trivia
The first League meeting of these teams was played at Barrowfield. The Rangers having lost the toss, kicked off facing a strong sun, and Barker and McPherson went off with a run, and the latter sent in a shot, which Henderson cleared. For a time the game was confined to his goal, but a strong kick by Goldie brought relief, and Stevenson got off with a clever run, which he finished with a grand try for goal, but the ball went behind. The Rangers looked as if they had benefited from there past experiences, and played a good forward passing game. Five minutes from the stat, from a pass by Cowan, Barker put on the first point. This reverse had the effect of pulling the Clyde more together, and they certainly looked as if they would equalise. They came dashing on, led by Miller, and for a moment Rangers defence wavered, but Mitchell, who was going in great form, put a stop to their progress. The pressure, which had been upsetting the visitor’s defence, was at length brought to a close, and playing in something like the form shown in the opening stages, the Rangers rather more than held their own. From a pretty piece of passing between Cowan and A Smith, the play was carried down to the goal line, and the former, passing to Barker, who lay a few yards out from goal, the second goal was notched. The ball had hardly been restarted ere the visitors were again pressing hard, and Gray who had been doing a lot of good work, useful work all along, tipped the ball past Henderson five minutes from halftime. Halftime result – Rangers 3 goals: Clyde 0. With a tree goal lead the Rangers started very confidently, but the Clyde soon asserted themselves, and after some really sharp passages Stevenson, with a shot 30 yards out, beat Montgomery. This success infused new vigour into them, and for a time they looked as though they would have things pretty much their own way, but McPherson and Barker brought relief to their side. As the game went on feeling ran high, and the referee had frequently to penalise players for questionable tactics. Cowan was never seen to greater advantage, completely playing round his opponents, and showing great resource under difficult positions. McPherson and Barker broke away in brilliant fashion, and easily passed Bowie, Morrison and Goldie, and from a smart centre Gray put the ball through, but the referee’s whistle had blown for a foul. From the free kick, which followed Cowan, scored, the Clyde vainly protesting for offside. The Clyde were still full of running, and never flagged for an instant in their efforts to put a better complexion on the game, their forwards showing fine football, and having very hard luck. The Clyde were missing Miller badly, for although the remaining forwards were playing pluckily and well, the want of combination told when getting near goal. The fifth point, taken by Gray fairly upset the Clyde contingent, and to the end the Rangers held them severly in check. Result – Rangers 5 goals: Clyde 1 goal.
