Match Trivia

The Clyde played their opening match at Barrowfield Park, their opponents being the Rangers. Upward of 5000 spectators were present. The home team kicked off, and play was confined to midfield for some time. Gradually however the Rangers were driven back, and their colours lowered, Bonnar having the credit. The Rangers ten got up the field a bit – Maxwell having come to the rescue – the left wing again got on the ball, and it was soon in the vicinity of the strangers posts again. McKenzie kicked out very softly, and Gillespie soon had the ball between the uprights for a second time. The Clyde again got away, and the forwards working admirably together the ball was rushed through. Three goals in something less then twenty minutes. The remainder of the first half was well contested. In the matter of tries for goal the visitors had perhaps the best of it, but they were very unfortunate in shooting. Their style of play too at times neat enough was on the whole rather scattered and they lacked good goalkeeping. Just before the whistle blew Gillespie added another goal, making the score – Clyde 4 goals; Rangers 0. On recommencing the Rangers were at first driven back, but ere many minutes had elapsed they had managed the aggressive, and McBain scored the first goal for his side. This was immediately followed by another point for the home team. Some back and forward play ensured, and at the end of tem minutes Britton sent in a shot which no custodian could have resisted making six for the home team. Seven minutes later Clark added a seventh, and after some further play, in which both sides had an occasional look in, a second point was put on for the visitors. After this the Rangers had the best of it for some time, and kept their opponents pretty well hemmed in; but they had hard line at goals, and the Clyde getting possession, found their way up, and an eighth goal was scored. The game finished – Clyde 8 goals; Rangers 2 goals.
