Match Trivia
At Shawfield, where the crowd numbered fully 30,000, Rangers had ab exciting game, full of incident, to finish the year. The Light Blues were without Alan Morton, who is down with a chill, and they had to play practically all the second half without Walls, who unfortunately had a leg broken. Bowie also got severely injured in the first half, but pluckily returned to the field, although unable to move his right arm and apprehensive as to the condition of the collarbone. Clyde made a most promising start, Smith scoring from a ‘corner’ two minutes from the kick-off. Playing with a strong easterly wind in their rear, the Bridgeton men continued to trouble the Rangers’ defence, but gradually the champions asserted themselves, and Shingleton was stretched to save a capital header by Henderson and a hot shot by Cunningham. Nearing the interval, the Ibrox brigade got level, Walls, in a scrimmage following a free-kick, smashing home the equaliser. The early part of the second half was exciting. On the back of Walls’ serious mishap McDonald was upset in the goal region, and Cunningham converted the penalty. At the other end, Clyde got a free kick just outside the penalty line, and Robb had to effect a great save. Bowie nearly counted with a fine try which grazed Shingleton’s let upright. Play continued strenuous, with Rangers fully holding their own, and a few minutes from time, Henderson broke through from midfield and scored a fine goal. Handicapped as they were, the winners’ performance is due all praise. After the loss of Walls, they all bucked into their work like Trojans. Cunningham and Dixon were outstanding all through. Archibald combined well with Cunningham and had some spurts in his beat style. McDonald, I thought, played capitally in Morton’s usual berth, and Henderson did well, the young centre’s dashing scoring effort evoking quite an ovation. McCandless after an indifferent start, improved. He took the ball cleverly and kicked with great sureness. Of the Clyde, I thought the forwards the best department. They were smart on the ball, combined well, and made ground rapidly. They all played well. Farrell gave a stylish and effective display at back
