Match Trivia
There was no end-of-the-season flavour about this concluding League fixture at Shawfield last night. During the earlier portion of the first half Rangers looked to have the game in hand after scoring twice, but Clyde never lay down, and when Beaton reduced the leeway, they became the dominant force. Their confidence increased shortly after the interval when McPhail failed to score from a penalty kick, and immediately after when Wilson equalised the scores. Clyde always had the ball at their feet. Gillies winning goal was merited on play, and although Rangers fought desperately for the equaliser, they had in the end to admit defeat by a better-balanced team. Although Rangers dominated play for the better part of the first half, Clyde had two excellent chances to score in the early stages, Robertson twice testing Dawson with shots which brought out the full capabilities of the goalkeeper. Smith opened the scoring for Rangers after 20 minutes play from a cross from the left. Seven minutes later, Kinnear added a second after clever play by Venters. Clyde rallied wonderfully in the last quarter of an hour of the first period, and 12 minutes from the interval Beaton scored with a shot which cannoned off Dawsons right-hand post into the net. Clyde continued to show sparkling form after the interval, but in a Rangers attack Smith was brought down. McPhail shot weakly from the spot and Brown easily saved. Immediately after, Clyde broke away on the right and a corner was forced from which Wilson headed through, Dawson allowing the ball to slip between his fingers. After 18 minutes Gillies put Clyde on the lead with a header. A few minutes later Gillies broke clear away, but Dawson saved his shot in brilliant fashion. Towards the end Rangers made great efforts to snatch the equaliser, but the Clyde defence held out till the end
