Match Trivia

This looks not so good for Clyde, but they were not so far out of it as the score suggests. For 22 minutes they fully held their own. They brought tactics to bear against the Rangers scheming, and up to the point it was a match full of interest and possibility. The McPhail, with a five drive with his right foot, beat Stevenson, who could not possibly save. Even after this Clyde were well in the running, but then Rangers got a penalty and Smith converted the game took a decided turn in the Ibrox team’s favour. Stevenson saved Smith’s kick from the spot, but the Rangers centre got the ball from the goalkeeper’s parry and netted. It was a splendid effort by the custodian. Before the interval Archibald scored a third goal. His shot flew at a great rate, and when Summers put his foot out the ball deflected past Stevenson. In the second half Rangers had matters well in hand. Five minutes after the restart Archibald nicely placed a corner kick and McPhail headed a fourth goal. The fifth goal was pretty work. Stevenson put Archibald away, and the winger, after beating Smith, placed the ball for Ibrox Smith to head through. Clyde were always fighting a forlorn hope, and in a brisk forward rally Boyd scored a lovely goal. But Rangers came again, and Stevenson ran through the home defence to score a sixth. I saw some clever football. Clyde were not disgraced – they were simply beaten by a more powerful, more cohesive team. Making his League debut, Cheyne created an excellent impression. His anticipation was sound, he tackled well, and his clearing was sure. He has a good sense of position. Gray was his sound, usual self and Dawson a safe resourceful custodian. On a well-balanced half-back line Brown was conspicuous with his all-round distribution. Smith was a constant danger to the Clyde defence, who did not know very well how to beat him. Stevenson and McPhail led out with advantage, and Archibald was a menacing raider. Nicolson contented himself by lobbing the ball across. No blame rests on Stevenson’s shoulders for the loss of six goals. He was a capable custodian. The job was just a little too big for the backs and the half-backs. As a result, the forwards suffered, and Boyd and Howieson had to go back and search for the ball. Boyd’s goal was one of the features. I liked young Stevenson at outside right. He showed no backwardness until the second half, but it was a big occasion for a lad to make his debut
