Match Trivia

Played at Barrowfield before 6000 spectators. The Rangers won the toss, and played with the wind and sunshine in their faces. The Rangers at once took the game in hand, Hyslop sending in a splendid shot, which Hamilton fisted away. Immediately afterwards McPherson right in front of goal, had two splendid shots which nearly succeeded. The Clyde at last broke away, and Campbell had an excellent opportunity, but in his anxiety he shot the ball high over the bar. Play opened up a bit, and the Clyde getting well down, Scott with a swift shot just missed scoring, the ball skimming the crossbar. From a free kick taken by Mitchell, Hamilton gave away a corner flag kick, from which no advantage was gained. The ground was rather heavy, but this did not seem to interfere to any extent with the play, which was good, and at times exciting. McPherson was playing very cleverly for the Rangers, and had hard luck in not scoring on several occasions. The Clyde also suffered in this respect, and an effort by Stevenson was certainly worthy of a goal. From some clever passing by McPherson, Hyslop and Smith, the latter sent in a splendid shot, which went through at the corner, out of the reach of Hamilton, and the Rangers scored the first goal of the match, after twenty minutes. The Clyde were awarded a penalty kick, which Dickie saved at the expense of a corner, and for a time the Clyde were most unfortunate in front of the Rangers goal. At length McKenzie equalised, dashing in quickly, and having the ball through before Dickie could realise it. At halftime each side had a goal. On resuming play, the Rangers dashed way, and Smith scored a goal, but he was declared off side, a decision which was not meet with general approval. The Rangers were awarded a penalty kick, but Hyslop sent the ball past the post. However a minute later, Hamilton headed the ball through scoring the second and leading goal for the Rangers, who now fairly assumed the upper hand, the Clyde seldom being allowed past midfield. The Clyde put in some determined work, and forced a corner, but failed to obtain the equaliser. From a fine shot by Smith, the ball went off Foyers into the net, and the Rangers scored their third goal, which virtually decided the match. From a corner Hyslop smartly headed a fourth, which took all interest out of the match. McPherson added a fifth, and although the Clyde struggled hard they were fully outplayed. For a time they held the game fairly equal, but after failing to score from a penalty kick they never recovered. On the whole, as the score shows, the Rangers had a comparatively easy victory. After some clever forward work, Miller shot the sixth goal, but Haig might have saved the point. Miller scored a seventh, and Smith an eighth. The result was – Rangers 8 goals: Clyde 1 goal. Raisbeck missed a first half penalty, and Hyslop missed a second half penalty
