Match Trivia

Playing wonderfully clever football on the sodden ground, the Rangers forwards kept spreading the Clyde defence, and when Brown got the first goal, after capturing Young’s centre, Shingleton had little or no chance. Cairns had the second from fairly far out, and the third was the outcome of a masterly run-in by Gordon, who left Brown to finish off. The soldier centre was near it more than once afterwards, and altogether it was an anxious opening period for Clyde, whose forwards were only occasionally able to relieve the pressure. Need I say that the appearance of Young, of Lochgelly and Raith Rovers on the Rangers’ extreme left, caused people to lift their eyebrows. He opened well, but tapered off a bit. Bowie was the master mind, and, along with Gordon and Archibald, showed us some delightful football. Brown was a constant menace, and the others were all as good as need be, including McQueen, who is developing his game nicely. Physically Clyde were not so well endowed as the opposition, and that told on such a day. Their play in the second half, however, was really excellent. Oh, for a marksman! Arnold Holt made a capital debut, although Chambers and Currie – the latter had to be assisted off with a ‘dicky’ knee before the finish – were the cleverest forwards, Beattie was most consistent at half-back. And Thorpe and Melville defended stoutly after the interval.
