Match Trivia

Good football was at a discount at Shawfield for, although the Rangers with comparative ease, ousted the Clyde from the Glasgow Cup ties, the general character of the play provided little to enthuse over. This was all the more surprising because of the fact that Clyde were a weak and incompetent eleven; a side that was only a shadow of the team that divided the honours with the Hearts a few weeks ago. After a bright and bustling opening by the Clyde, the Rangers retaliated by somewhat similar methods, and a blunder on the part of Gilligan enabled Campbell to open the scoring. When Livingstone added a second, and then a third before the interval, the life of the home side began to ebb. Up to that point it was a game minus any combination forward; there was a happy-go-lucky movement about most of the players, but the ‘Light Blues’ excelled in profiting by every opening that cause their way, while Clyde fell off when a little steadiness at goal would have yielded a goal. In the second half the game was even less interesting for the Clyde could make absolutely no headway, and after several attacks on the home goal the visitors were placed four up by a smartly-taken point by Campbell. Notwithstanding this, it was surprising that the Ibrox attack clung to a style so foreign to their usual. It was at times nothing other than a long kick and a rush after the ball. The Clyde instead of improving on their display against the Hearts, were feebleness personified. The defence if not just so strong as on that occasion, were fairly safe divisions, through the placing of the halves was very often faulty. In the front line Graham deserved much sympathy. He got no support, and when he tried to work things for the others, they left him in the lurch. On the Rangers side Craig was the better back, Gordon the neatest of the halves, though May was the most effective. Of the forwards Campbell maintained his scoring form. He is not ideal centre, and yet while he moves rather clumsily he astonished the onlooker by the certainty with which he scores. Livingstone had two of the goals, and he along with Dickie gave Robertson a stiff journey, though there was nothing brilliant in their work. Kyle would perhaps have been of more advantage to his side had he been less attentive to Morrison, while Alex Smith played his usually fine game. When he chose, no one could stop him
