Match Trivia
After having been in full command of the game at Shawfield yesterday for the first ten minutes, at the end of which time they might quite easily have been two goals up, Clyde fell away, and Rangers at half-time held a four-goal lead. Smith claiming three of them. With five minutes gone Clyde were awarded a penalty kick for Simpsons handling, but Knox gave Hamilton the simplest of shots to hold. Rankine by a cute move, put Boyd in possession, but the centre, instead of going on, shot immediately, and the ball passed over the crossbar. The Ibrox men, through Archibald, bore down on Stevenson, and McPhail netted, but offside nullified the point. Within a few minutes, however, McPhail slipped a lovely ball through to Smith, who beat Stevenson from close in. Clydes answer was a spasmodic raid, which was smothered. Rangers played very confidently, and Meiklejohn was quite at home at right half. Archibald was like the old Sandy, galloping down the wing and sending over inviting crosses, from one of which Smith added a second goal. Clydes defence had a rough passage, the Ibrox attack being very nippy and combining almost perfectly. Gibsons old injury seemed to reassert itself. The centre-half limped badly. Smith added a third goal from a Nicholson cross, and from a foul on Archibald by Simpson, about 30 yards out. Rangers went further ahead, Meiklejohns lob deceiving Stevenson and passing into the net high up. On the resumption, it was noticed that Gibson was at outside-right, Lowe and Smith moving to accommodate him. Rangers were rampant and Nicholson and McPhail got right in on Clydes goal, and McPhail laid the ball right on for Marshall to add to Clydes discomfiture. There was no holding Rangers now, and it was no surprise when McPhail added number six. Gibson, obviously suffering, had retired just previously. Rangers kept at it, and Smith added two further goals from Archibald crosses, bringing his sides total to eight and his own to five. From now until the end, the champions treated us to some parlour stuff, an occasional burst by Bold and King being all that Clyde could manage. Clyde lost their chance in the first 15 minutes, when they had it in their power to establish a sound lead. Once Rangers scored their second goal, Clyde were really never in it. Stevenson, I thought, should have stopped two of Smiths goal, and also Davie Meiklejohns lob. The Light Blues were all good, with Smith and Brown outstanding. Willie Rankine, Blair and Boyd were Clydes strong men. Attendance 17,000. Knox missed a 5th minute penalty
