Match Trivia

Two thinks were keen at Shawfield – the frost and the game. I heard some severe critics talk as if they regarded the play, also, as frosty; but, when you take the conditions into account, there was not much wrong with it. Both Rangers and Clyde took risks. They spared neither themselves nor each other. I believe that Rangers, who won, would not have quarrelled with a draw. Though there was a certain margin of solidity and resource in their defence that made them seen very secure in that quarter against the emergency Clyde forward line, they had enough of anxiety to have made even a divide welcome. The Ibrox attack, though possessed of a system, never could get it to work thoroughly, partly because of the worrying tackling and recovery of the Clyde halfs and the steadiness of Cowan and Farrell. I never could quite see how these Rangers forwards were going to score, then, fifteen minutes after the restart, McGhie up-ended centre Duncan, and got a lecture from the referee – it was not the only lecture of the afternoon. Riddell fired in a rising ball from the free kick and Shingleton just managed to get his hands to it and make it graze the under part of the bar as it went into the net. That was all the scoring – thanks, largely, to Hempsey, who both before it and after it. Saved in accomplished style from Watson, Shimmons and Forrest. We saw two rattling good defences, in which Blair was the master of arts. Manderson put himself into one or two tight corners and got himself out of them as quickly. Cowan’s commission was made a little easy by Lawson’s inability to get going, and Farrell, with Neave in front of him, held the Bowie-Duncan wing fairly safe. At half-back the play was of a telling sort and all were good. Clyde’s rearranged forward line did quite well, but Morris was missing for his centres. Watson and McGowan were nippy and luckless, and Forrest was not the worst by any means. Martin tried hard to get the Rangers’ line to settle, and the right wing had some clever adventures, but, mostly the Clyde defence were a shade too strong for the Rangers’ vanguard
