Match Trivia
A strong, troublesome wind blew across the Barrowfield Park, as the Clyde and Rangers met to decide their tie. There was a small crowd to begin, but the numbers rapidly increased, and there was fully 10,000 present at halftime. The Clyde won the toss, and played with the wind in their favour, the Rangers kicking off. The Rangers at once led the way, and H McCreadie shot past. A very clever run by Turner resulted in the ball being passed to the left where Smith had to kick out to save further progress of his opponents. Then the Clyde men were awarded a free kick close on the Rangers goal, which was in danger for a time being. After ten minutes play the Rangers scored the first goal of the match. One of the Clyde players was penalised for tripping McPherson, who passed the ball on to Steel, who slipped it through very easily. As the game progressed the Rangers were seen to advantage, and McCorkindale had to look active in saving. Although putting in some clever work occasionally, it was apparent that they were outmatched in general tactics and in play. McCorkindale just managed to save a shot from McPherson, but Steel rushing in, scored the second goal for the Rangers before the Clyde goalkeeper could recover himself. Turner was the most conspicuous forward on the Clyde side, and his dribbling, dodging and general play was admired. The Clyde had several opportunities to score right in front of the Rangers goal, but could not utilise them, Smith and Drummond dashing in and getting the ball away when it might have been sent through. The Clyde certainly experienced hard lines in not having at least one goal, the ball on one occasion just hitting the crossbar and dropping into play. A halftime the Rangers led by 2 goals to nil. With two goals to the good and the wind in their favour it was pretty generally conceded that the Rangers would enter the semi-final. Hurry at the start forced Smith to concede a corner, but without advantage. After about eight minutes play McPherson with a long shot scored a third goal for the Rangers rather easily, thus placing the result at this early stage practically beyond all doubt. The Clyde forwards lad many an attack, but the Rangers halfbacks and backs proved far too much for them. Whenever a Clyde forward looked like scoring the ball was at once taken from him and placed well down the field. The Rangers forwards too, were doing pretty much as they liked, and the Clyde’s goal had some hairbreadth escapes. Besides being unfortunate to some extent the Clyde were handicapped through the absence of two of their usual halfbacks, but in the circumstance trainer Humphrey had his men in good condition. After about 20 minutes lay Steel scored the fourth goal for the Rangers, McCorkindale being rushed through the goal. At nearly every point the Rangers were superior, and the task they had in defeating the Clyde was easier than at first imagined. The Rangers display dashing, irresistible form, and Steel, with the finest shot of the day, scored the fifth goal. The result was – Rangers 5 goals: Clyde 0.
