Match Trivia

Clyde took their last League game of the season to Celtic Park. The change was justified by the attendance, which exceeded 35,000. That was the best of Clyde’s perfect day, as they were well beaten on points of play and in goals. McNamee, of the Accies, as pivot was Clyde’s only chance, the advent of Mick Hamill from Belfast failing to materialise. Clyde went with the wind, and it was not many minutes before Shingleton got a fright of his life. It was quite a Rangers’ rampant opening. McLean had a wheezer blocked, and Cunningham went through for a shot at the goalie. He got there, but Shingleton held, and the whistle went for relief, McLean taking the keeper. The head work was Rangers, and the Clyde’s nearest approach to danger was a high shot from Maxwell which passed the wood on the wrong side. Closing in on the interval Clyde missed their best chance, Smith put over to Maxwell, who returned, a Ranger fluked, and Smith had a final shot, which Lock luckily diverted for a flag kick. Rangers were not flattered by their unit margin at the turn. Rangers were quick to take command, and Donnachie’s conception was hallmarked. The Reds faltered, and invariably failed. Smith tried his luck, but was out of range for a finish. Bowie failed to get through from six yards. McCrae, of West Ham experience, did not shine. Expectations did not mature here. Rangers’ second goal, which settled the issue, was quite a pretty effort. It came after twelve minutes – Bowie to Cunningham, a slip to McLean, who drove home past Shingleton’s left guard. Clyde’s backs were a pair of sticklers. They didn’t give much away in a tackle, and Thorpe very cleverly left Cunningham standing. Clyde had plenty of fight left, but still very little punch. They were too quick to get the ball away, and placed imperfectly. A couple of flag kicks was their only reward. Then away sped Archibald. He did the hundred in 11.5 and tapped across to McLean. Unmarked. Mac shot, and Shingleton was beaten OK for the third goal, which marked McLean for the hat trick. The Clyde players as a rule failed to gauge the wind, and kept the ball too much in the air. Smith was the best forward in red, and Cunningham in blue, and the Darvel man was unselfish always. It was now simply a case of playing out time. Gordon from a place kick asked Shingleton for a flag kick. Archibald placed well, and Bowie got it on his head for the fourth and last goal
