Match Trivia
North American Tour - Playing through a steady downpour of rain the Glasgow Rangers, soccer champions of Scotland defeated the Sparta Soccer club, Chicago champions 4 goals to 1, at Soldiers’ field yesterday. Six thousand fans braved the storm to see their favourites go down in defeat. The rangers opened the scoring in the first half when they were awarded a penalty after one of the Sparta’s defence accidentally handled the ball. Alan Morton took the free kick and scored with a fast low shot. Play continued fast in spite of the soggy field, and Kratocvil of Sparta in the next few minutes tied the score. The Rangers showed to advantage in the second half, and although Sparta’s defence was strong, especially with Gardiner at back, the visitors scored three goals through, McPhail, Fleming and Marshall. ‘Wee Willie’ McLean was the outstanding player for the Chicago team. He continually kept the visitors’ defence going at top speed to protest their goal
On a terribly wet day the ground was anything but good; still, in the conditions prevailing the play was wonderful. In a fast half the Sparta side gave out fellows plenty to do, and the teams crossed over all square at a goal apiece, Alan Morton and Kratochvil scoring. After the interval the Ibrox boys struck a nice easy-going game, and goals were added by Bob McPhail, Jamie Fleming and Jamie Marshall. Seven thousand people watched the match with keen interest and enjoyment.
