Match Trivia

This Glasgow League match was played at Celtic Park, before 12,000 spectators on a fast pitch. The football at the outset was of a very high class, the Rangers forwards especially giving a splendid display. Adams ought to have been beaten early but McPhie shot past from close range. After several attempts by the Celts to beat Sinclair, the visitor’s forwards again attacked, and following a miskick by McLeod, McPhie hooked the ball between the posts. The Celts played desperately to equalise, but the Rangers defence could not be beaten, although on one occasion Sinclair was distinctly lucky in being in the way of a drive by Bauchop. Quinn had one rare try after beating two opponents, but Sinclair again cleared. Halftime – Rangers 1 goal: Celtic 0. In the second half the Celts had to ply without Loney, who had to leave the field in the first half. Beautiful work by the Rangers forwards took the play forward to Spies who ran between the backs and scored. The Celts were seen at their best for some time after this, but failed to get the better of Sinclair, Quinn especially having very bad luck. Near the close a mistake by the Celtic right defence left Spiers with a good opening, and he scored again. The game was keenly contested to the end, but without further scoring. Result – Rangers 3 goals: Celtic 0. Drawings £335
