Match Trivia

Played at Celtic Park, Parkhead before 35,000 spectators. The Celtic Kicked off, and the ball being passed out to the left, Neil gave a corner, which nearly resulted in the downfall of the Rangers charge on two successive occasions, Dickie fisting out a nice overhead kick. The enthusiasm from the very start was intense. For a time the Celtic had the best of it, but the Rangers soon turned the tide in their favour, and from a free kick close in the ball was sent flying past the post. Again the Celtic rallied, and amidst tremendous excitement Gilhooley sent in a magnificent shot, which Dickie just diverted from going through. Immediately afterwards King banged the ball into the net, but offside was given. The game had to be stopped for a minute or two owing to an accident to Orr, who was brought round, but he limped badly, and the Celtic were practically with ten men. Gradually the Rangers fell into their play, and they taxed the energies of the Celtic, Hamilton sending in a grand shot which McArthur saved. Some strong well-timed passing by the Celtic forwards broke down the opposition, but when it came to the crucial time there was nobody in front of goal to send the ball through. Had the Celtic been able to take advantage of the chances that presented themselves there can be little doubt that ere the first half-hour they would have been leading? About 35 minutes of the game had gone when Hyslop passed the ball over to McPherson, who scored with a grand shot. Encouraged by their success, the Rangers played in rousing fashion, and the run of play looked all in their favour. Orr met with a second accident, and had to be assisted off the field. Immediately afterwards Hamilton with a quick, high shot scored the second goal for the Rangers, who were playing with great confidence. The Celts managed to get a corner, but no advantage was gained, and once more the Rangers brought play into their opponents territory. At halftime the Rangers led by 2 goals to 0. The Celtic came away at once in the second half and had two shots, which failed to take effect. Clearly the Celtic had the worst of the luck, and in saying so we do not in any way distract from the Rangers efforts in getting the lead. Even with ten men the Celtic were playing strongly, but somehow when they came to close quarters they could not bring off the desired goal. Welford was prominent in the Celtic defence, and bar some mistakes in the first half gave an excelling account of himself. It was a very hard game throughout, and at times the play exciting, determination marking every man’s face. McMahon was proving himself the best forward the Celtic had, and put forth strenuous endeavours to beat the defence, but was unlucky. Drummond was so hard pressed that he had to give away a corner flag kick, which proved of no advantage to the Celts. The Rangers had the ball through a third time, but the point was disallowed, McArthur being played too soon. N Smith was penalised for tripping an opponent, but neither from this nor subsequent advantages could the Celtic score, everything seeming to go against them. The Celtic, although they were clearly handicapped struggled hard, but could make little impression on the Rangers defence. Towards the close however, the game underwent a marvellous change. Eight minutes from the close the Celts came away, and Gilhooley scored their first goal. Five minutes later Russell equalised with a fast long shot. The enthusiasm was intense, the Celtic supporters shouting themselves hoarse. The result was a raw, 2 goal each. The total drawings came to £1149 - £828 at the gate, and £321 at the stands.
