Match Trivia
Sandy McMahon Benefit Match. This interesting fixture was decided at Celtic Park last night in beautiful weather before 10,000 spectators. The Celts kicked off, and were speedily driven back, but Hamilton shot wide. Howden, who filled Dickie’s place in the Rangers goal, was very previous, and one mistake of his allowed the Celts to score; but the point was disallowed. Shortly afterwards Gilhooley gained a goal with a fine angular shot, Miller for the Rangers, was first to beat McArthur, but offside was given, and then Hamilton with a grand shot took the Celtic custodian by surprise and made the score level. At this stage the Rangers were playing superbly, and only some magnificent goalkeeping by McArthur kept them out, Hyslop and McPherson made a most effective wing, but were rather unfortunate near goal. In the second half the Celts opened the scoring through Bell, but were not long on the lead, McArthur blundering, and allowing Hamilton to rush the ball through, and make the score equal. Neither team was able to score further, and the game ended in a draw of 2 goals each. The game was contested in a friendly spirit, with the result that the football was of a distinctly high-class character. Both forwards’ lines were remarkably clever, but the Rangers were superior at halfback, Neil and Robertson being most effective. Welford for the Celts was the best back on the field, and McArthur of course outshine Howden in goal. £175 was drawn at gate and stands and as tickets to the amount of over £125 were sold, it is expected that McMahon will realise at least £300
