Match Trivia

These teams met at Celtic Park before fully 30,000 spectators, in wet weather. The Rangers started against the breeze, but in spite of this handicap they more than held their own, and from a fine forward run five minutes after the kick-off Kyle opened the scoring, Adams having no chance to save. The Celts owing to the grand defence of Jackson, Craig and Newbigging could not get on level terms in spite of several likely looking runs. Jackson although injured continued to play a grand defensive game. After some exciting play around the Rangers goal the Celts equalised, Somers beating Newbigging with a low oblique shot. Play was evenly divided to the interval. Halftime – 1 goal each. One minute after the resumption Newbigging saved from Bennett, and then Jackson, who had being twice previously injured, was so badly hurt that he had to leave the field. The visitors however played pluckily and Adams goal underwent several narrow escapes. The Celtic forwards were frequently given off side after Jackson’s departure, and Newbigging owing to brilliant play by Craig and Gray was seldom tested. The Rangers splendidly coached by Kyle forward looked like getting the leading goal, when McLeod gave away a free kick just outside the penalty line. A few minutes from time the Celtic left wing broke away, and from a throw-in the ball was sent across to Templeton who headed their second goal, the Celtic winning a strenuous match, somewhat luckily. Result – Celtic 2 goals: Rangers 1. Gate money £760; stands £220 – total £980
