Match Trivia
In spite of a pitiless rainstorm some 30,000 spectators turned up at Celtic Park, the playing pitch of which was in a deplorable condition. The Rangers kicked off, and the Celts quickly getting into their stride, bombarded the Rangers goal. Sinclair and Fraser defended splendidly, and although value for a goal or two, the home team failed to get the better of Sinclair, After about 20 minutes play the Rangers opened out the game, but they were useless at close quarters against McLeod and Orr, who defended well. So feebly did the Rangers forwards play that Adams got absolutely nothing to do. Right to the end of this half the Celts held the upper hand, but failed to score a single point, Sinclair being unbeatable. Halftime – No scoring. The visitors showed a decided improvement on resuming. They had only 10 men against them, McLeod who had to retire injured just before halftime, being unable to turn out. Brilliant play by Smith and Kyle roved too much for the Celtic defence. Kyle sent across a very fast centre, and Speedie literally throwing himself at the ball, sent it past Adams. Shortly after Adams failed to clear from Smith, and Robertson put on the second goal. Thereafter Quinn was ordered off the field by Referee Robertson. Immediately the game was restarted a section of the spectators broke in and mobbed the players and the referee. Mr Robertson was assaulted, and he had to be escorted from the field by several policemen. Some of the Celtic players were carried off the field by their sympathisers. It took 10 minutes to clear the playing pitch, and the game resumed only to be immediately finally stopped by another break-in. At that time and with about 10 minutes to go, the score stood – Rangers 2 goals: Celtic 0
