Match Trivia
These teams met under League auspices on Celtic Park before 12,000 spectators. The Celts were the first to come away, and close in goal one of the Rangers inadvertently gave away a corner, which was well placed by Madden, but Smith cleared. A grand run by the Rangers forwards, Barker and McPherson especially raised the enthusiasm of the crowd. Kelly with a great turn of speed, made an endeavour to pull up the opposing forwards, but it was no use. Close I however one of the backs saved the parting shot, which came from Barker. A free kick against the Rangers 20 yards out rose dangerous. Meechan took the kick, and McMahon with one of his clever overhead kicks, tried to score, the ball just dropping over the crossbar. The play on the whole was very open, and as all the men were evidently in the best of form the play was of a high-class description. After the opening stages the Rangers had the best of the exchanges, and Doyle and Meechan were kept hard at work defending. The sunshine was in the eyes of the Celts and this seemed to trouble them a good bit in coping with the capital work put in by the Rangers forwards. There was some fine kicking by the backs on either side, and all over the game was a grand one, full of good play, and always interesting to watch. After some 25 minutes a grand dropping shot far out resulted in the Celts scoring the first goal, amidst loud cheering. The ball had just been kicked off when James Oswald equalised for the Rangers, and play became faster and more exciting than ever if that were possible. At halftime each side had a goal. The opening stages of the second half produced some fine passing between Blessington and Madden. Madden sent in a long shot, which McAllan tried to save, but let the ball go through. It was a good bit of play that led to the goal being taken, and it certainly at this early stage in such a close game gave the Celts a big pull. The Rangers knowing this pulled themselves together, but they were well held in hand. Andrew McCreadie met with a twist to his knee, and had to be carried off the field. Leaving the Rangers to play with ten men. A fine long shot by Willie Maley went sailing onto the Rangers goal. McAllan got the ball away, but Madden was on the alert, and very nearly brought the downfall of the Rangers goal. McCreadie came on to the field after an absent of about ten minutes, but the was still hoppling and he might as well have stayed off. Madden was in his best mood, and after 20 minutes play he ran the ball right up finishing with a terrific shot, which scored the third goal for the Celts. Towards the close of the game was taken in hand by the Celts, but the Rangers had occasional runs, and but for the timely interference of Meechan, who was in grand form might have scored. McArthur too, had to look active in saving. Blessington at length retired from the game crippling, and Madden was left by himself, and was probably the best forward on the field. Towards the close the Rangers pressed the Celtic defence very hard, and Oswald scored the second goal, and very nearly had the equaliser. Blessington return to the field, but he might have well have stayed inside. The Rangers were awarded a free kick close to the Celts goal, and it was thought they might equalise. The ball however was sent out and Smith in attempting to score sent the ball yards over the bar, and the result was – Celtic 3 goals: Rangers 2 goals.
