Match Trivia

Alec McNair Benefit Match, I would have liked to have seen a bigger crowd at Celtic Park last night. Alex McNair’s services to the Celtic and to Scotland were surely value much more than the £117 taken at the gate. I may state that no tickets were sold for the match. Mr W Maley considering there is little use distributing ‘briefs’ for which there is often no financial return. It was a nice quiet game, in which there was much pretty play. Nothing took place to warrant the rabid Celt flying at the throat of the perfervid Ranger or vice-versa. Still there were a few people present who seemed to think the fate of the nation hinged on the result. In a way it is good that this should be so. This enthusiasm is, after all, the bone and muscle of football. I am not going into the intricacies of the match. The Celtic youngsters exhibited a lot of clever play in a game where the young ones shone, but failed to finish as the Ibrox side did hence their defeat. The Rangers inside right forward from Cambuslang finished best on his side. He slipped on both goals in the opening half. The first ball came across from Bennett, the other from Paterson. ‘D Echmont’ is a clever lad, and I will not be surprise to learn before the week is out that he has joined the Ibrox ground staff. His partner for the night is well known in junior circles. I refer to Elijah Cresswell, of Parkhead. He did fairly well. Celtic also had their debutant McMillan of Kirkintilloch Harp, although a junior, is no novice. I expect to hear more of this promising extreme left wing forward. Another feature of the match was the appearance of the respective goalkeepers. From the pavilion balcony, John Glenn of Derry Celtic, who played in the Scotland-Ireland League International at Firhill, and Shaw might have passed for Dromios. Both are fine custodians, and both in appearance, reminded me of William Donnelly, who years ago was a prime favourite at Shawfield. I fancy that in Glenn the Rangers have picked up somebody worth having. I was impressed with the display given by Muir, the ex-St Bernard back, who kicked a beautiful ball. RG Campbell was safe, Waddell was the most energetic Ibrox half-back, and Bennett and Paterson delighted with their pretty moving in front. Reid often wrought himself into position, but had little luck with his shots. I liked the Celtic boys, Cassidy and Connolly. Their footwork was a treat, but I though the inside right player might have given McAtee just a shade more of the ball. The Croy man was in fine fettle, as also was Browning. None of the halves were as effective as the Rangers trio, although all wrought hard. Davidson whom I say for the first time, knows more than a little about the half-back position. I have seen McNair do better often. But, as a matter of fact, the Rangers were superior in defence. Goals were much easier got against McNair and McGregor than at the other end.
