Match Trivia

The return League match between the Celtic and the Rangers was played at Parkhead before 25,000 spectators. The match was looked upon as virtually deciding the League championship. The weather was dull and gloomy, but the rain cleared off before the start. The Rangers won the toss, and chose to defend the pavilion goal. Martin started, and almost immediately Ferguson fastened the latter to have a shy at goal, but the shot went wide. Doyle stopped a likely run by Barker, and then a foul against the Rangers stopped their further progress. The Light Blues, however hung round about McArthur, and a shot from Gibson was only just headed clear by Doyle. The Celts left wing again came to the rescue, and some pretty work between the centre and McMahon too the Celts up field, but Drummond easily cleared when it looked bad for Ibrox. A rush by the right wing took the Rangers near McArthur, and when near that custodian Barker passed to A smith, who had no difficulty in scoring. A nasty cross wind, which blew right across the field, proved very troublesome while the footing was not of the best. The game however was of the fastest description, both teams alternately having their share of attacking. A corner off Marshall followed, but try as the home team liked they were unable to score. The left wing was getting too much to do. A good deal of feeling was imparted to the game, and the referee gave both teams a word of caution, and none too soon either. The home team at last got their reward, a quick shot from the right beating McLeod, who endeavoured to kick the ball out, but it glanced off his foot into the net. The fortunes of the game were fluctuating in a marked degree, the Rangers taking up the running on restarting, the left wing in the van. An accident to McPherson on the twelve yards line stopped their progress, and the international had to leave the field, the injury apparently being a severe one. Following on this, McLeod’s charge underwent a regular bombardment, and the custodian made amends for his previous error. Twice in succession he saved brilliantly, one shot from Martin being cleared in great style. A header from McMahon after a beautifully placed corner by Ferguson was too much for the ex-Dumbartonian, and the Celts took the lead after forty minutes play. McPherson reappeared with a bandage round his forehead. A foul against Doyle 15 yards from McArthur was not made much use of, Barker’s shot going high over the bar. McMahon had an easy chance to put his team two up, but his effect was a feeble one, and halftime was called shortly after with the Celts leading by 2 goals to 1. After the interval the Rangers as in the first half, were first to show up and Hugh McCreadie had hard lines with a shot, which just grazed the uprights. A grand return by Meechan was badly foozled by Mitchell, and McLeod had to look lively to save Blessington shot. The home team hung dangerously round the Rangers goal, Smith conceding a corner, from which nothing resulted. The Rangers were unable to settle down, their half’s not placing as they might, with the result that Doyle and Meechan got too many free kicks. A good sprint by A Smith left Meechan in the rear, and off his centre Oswald put in a clinker, which McArthur managed to hold and clear. Some quiet play followed, and then McArthur had again to throw himself full length at a shot from McCreadie, which he barely managed to tip round the post. The fine display of their goalkeeper gave encouragement to the Celts, and a break away by their right wing resulted in their total being further augmented, McMahon putting on the finishing touch with his head. Rain came down heavily and the light became very bad, the players being difficulty discerned. Although they were tow goals down, the Rangers responded in plucky fashion, but McPherson was practically useless, and his presence was more of a hindrance than anything else. Kelly was playing a wonderful game at centre half, the way he picked the ball from the feet of his opponents being very clever, while his speed served him in good stead against Oswald. Once more the Celts scored, but offside was claimed and allowed, Ferguson being the transgressor. A legitimate point was not long in coming however, the Celtic forwards clean beating the half’s and sending the ball past McLeod, Blessington being the scorer. A fifth followed within a minute, Battles scoring from halfback. Not content with this, Morrison got a chance from Martin, which he promptly accepted, McLeod making little attempt to save the shot. These reverses would have their effect on any team, but the Rangers showed surprising luck. They were rewarded by a grandly taken goal by McCreadie, the score standing 6 to 2 in favour of the Celts, with 20 minutes to go. The game was well contested to the close. Celtic 6 goals: Rangers 2 goals.
