Match Trivia
The concluding match in the First League competition was played yesterday on Celtic Park in beautiful weather before 15,000 spectators. Doyle won the toss, and sharp on time Hamilton started for the Light Blues. Welford within the first minute was injured in collision with A Smith, but the Englishman recovered quickly, and play resumed. McPherson missed with a fine try, and a free kick helped the Celts, but Campbell shot past. Open play, in which both sets of halves were clever, followed, and then McPherson, if he had not dallied too long, might have earned a point for Ibrox. Orr gave away a corner to A Smith, but the advantage was spoiled, and a minute later A Smith with Welford after him, shot past. At the other end Crawford nicely disposed Allan close in, and then Welford running across kicked out to stop a promising rush of Low’s. A long shot of King’s went past, and from the kick-out the Ibrox right had a corner, which was easily cleared. A nice centre of Gilhooley’s was badly mulled by the inside man, after A Smith had been run out at McArthur’s end by Welford, Neil shot past with a bit to spare. Gilhooley had a look in, in conjunction with Allan, but Crawford spoiled them in the finishing, and then fine work between Gibson and Neil let the Light Blues forwards away, only a close thing in offside on the part of Hamilton spoiling the chance. The Ibrox forwards were very difficult to hold, and King was pulled up for fouling McPherson, but the free kick was sent behind. McMahon was dropped for a similar infringement, but Hamilton with a good chance, shot over. At the other end, Henderson from a pass of Allan’s, which needed no piloting, lifted right over the bar, and the crowd had a deal to say that was erratic of the day’s shooting. Allan from the goal line, send across beautifully, but there was nobody equal to the task at finishing the effort. With rare passing the Parkhead forwards got well in, and after King had tried Dickie, both Smith and Crawford had to clear. From fine work by McMahon, Allan had a corner, which King might have made more of, and then Doyle shot past from far out. Gilhooley with an open goal, shot right into Dickie’s hands, and N Smith from a succeeding throw in kicked away with nothing to spare from Allan. Dickie ran out, and kicked away from Campbell, with another Celtic forward in close attendance, and until the interval, with the exception of several poorly finished bursts on the part of Rangers front rank play ruled slightly in favour of Parkhead. Halftime – Celtic 0: Rangers 0. In the second half lay ruled fairly even, though the Celtic forwards worked better and the Ibrox front rank tired, Hamilton was pulled up for upsetting Russell, but from the free kick Welford sent over. Dickie kicked away from Allan, and Crawford just blocked a fine try of Gilhooley’s who a little later forced a corner, from which Henderson sent behind. Campbell shot past, and the Rangers got down, Smith just missing a fine cross shot of Hamilton’s. A free kick against the Ibrox brigade brought a lively second or two for the defence. Dickie under the bar, just getting rid of a nice low shot from Russell. Allan shot through, but was given offside. From a free kick against Doyle for tripping Low, the Light Blues almost scored, Doyle heading out close in, and McArthur fisting away a well-meant header from the left wing. Under severe pressure from the Ibrox forwards, the Celtic defence was shaky a little, but it recovered, and Gilhooley got down, Russell subsequently shot over, and Henderson who was nothing like himself, shot past. From a corner well placed by Allan, King sent over, and at the other end McArthur had to fist away from a free kick against Russell. Dickie threw away from Gilhooley, and King and from a corner forced by Gilhooley off Crawford, there was enough to do to clear. From a corner off N Smith Dickie Charge had a narrow shave, and a couple of minutes later there was as nearly as possible disaster at the Celtic end. Gilhooley missed by inches with a header from a corner, and from a free kick for hands against Russell the ball was sent behind. A fine game, which was characterised by beautiful if unprofitable football, ended – Celtic 0: Rangers 0
