Match Trivia

The return League match between these teams was played on Celtic Park yesterday afternoon before a crowd of about 40,000, and in ideal weather. The Rangers had the advantage of a slight wind in the first half, and as a consequence that had the better of the exchanges, and were frequently near Adams, but with the exception of Smith, none of the Rangers forwards showed any great ability in shooting. The same fault marked the play of their opponents, who showed clever enough work in the open, but could make no impression on the Rangers defence, which was proving able for all attacks. So far the game had been contested in the fairest spirit, and the spectators were treated to an exhibition of clever football, and were kept constantly interested. Up till the interval though both goals were frequently in danger, there was no scoring. When ends were changed the Celts took the game in hand, and for most of the time were engaged attacking the Rangers goal, but do as they would they could make no impression on the grand defence opposed to them. May, Stark, Craig and Walker playing with great sureness, and keeping them out. Only once in a while did the Rangers get neat Adams, but there was so much method in their movements that luck more than anything else saved their opponents. A grand shot by A Smith seemed to have bounded back from the net into play, but the referee disallowed the point, and in the next minute Hamilton had sprinted off on the left, and beating Gray and Walker on the way, he drove hard at Sinclair, who partially cleared but ere he could recover the ball was past him. In the closing minutes Rangers claimed a penalty for tripping but after consultation the referee gave a free kick outside the dreaded line. Result – Celtic 1: Rangers 0. Drawings – Gate £860; stands £300 – total £1160
