Match Trivia
This match, which had an important bearing on the League Championship, was decided at Celtic Part yesterday before a holiday attendance of over 30,000 – the amount drawn at the gate being £734, and at stands upwards of £200. The Rangers kicked off and lay for some time was very desultory, both teams being very excited. The Celts were first to settle down, and in eight minutes Hamilton gained and placed a corner-kick so accurately that Muir had no difficulty in breasting the ball into the goal where Bennett scored easily. The home team encouraged by this early success pressed strongly, and Muir and Hamilton just missed with fast cross shots. Two more corners fell to the Celts but both were cleared, and Rangers forced their way to the other end, where Speedie beat Adams with a oblique shot, and so equalised the score. It was now the Rangers turn to press and shooting much better than their opponents would have gained the lead, but for Adams whose saving from Walker, Speedie and Smith was very clever. Halftime – Celtic 1 goal: Rangers 1 goal. The Celtic forwards played beautiful football on resuming and looked like establishing a decided lead. The Rangers backs were quite hurried, but Watson came to their rescue and kept out some magnificent shots at short range. Bennett latterly beat him, but offside was given. Battles now went lame, and this allowed the Rangers right wing to become more dangerous. A lightning shot from Alex Smith was cleverly fielded by Adams, and Watson was equally smart in dealing with a fast high shot from Muir. Bennett put the Celts ahead, but only for a time as Mackie caught the Celtic defence wavering, dashed in and scored the equaliser amid great cheering. It was a splendid game, contested in the most friendly spirit, yet with the greatest determination. The Celts were by far the cleverer side, but not nearly so dangerous at close quarters as Rangers. For the home team Watson, Hay, Somers, and Bennett excelled and for the visitors Watson, Drummond, Walker and Alex Smith. Result – A draw – Celtic 2 goals: Rangers 2 goals.
