Match Trivia

In soccer circles generally the visit of this famous Scotch team had been eagerly looked forward to as likely to produce one of the best exhibitions of the dribbling code witnessed in Dublin for a considerable time. The recent fine display of Bohemians enhanced this forecast, and a goodly assembly was present to witness yesterday’s display at Dalymount Park. The wind, which has held of disagreeably strong proportions, culminated in a strong gale and swept the ground in most disconcerting fashion. Both teams were strongly represented, the Scotsmen having the greater number of their regular players doing duty. Bohemians fielded the same team practically as Saturday except that Heney came on at right half and Hannon partnered Seymour on the right wing. The only change in the visiting side from that Campbell filled the right full position, Ormonde going left. The home side won the toss, and took the wind advantage, which was considerable as a regular gale swept the ground from the Cabra goal. It was some minutes after time when Reid started, and Gordon sent well forward. Bohs were quickly back and after Hannon had made a nice opening form a good pass of Willitts’, Brennan just failed to beat Lock. The Rangers’ right wing worked away, and Irons returned, play again settling in the visitors’ end, McDonnell and West making great efforts to open the scoring, but the former going offside spoiled. A corner to Bohs was well cleared, but the attentions of Bohemians were persistent, and Campbell was in difficulties often. From a touch throw close down Rangers got away, Hendry clearing to touch at centre, where Bohs were awarded a free, and Irons sent a great drive to Lock, which the latter gathered well. Off-side against McDonnell again gave relief to the visitors, and Galt taking up the goal kick, the Rangers’ right got away, but failed to pass Irons, who returned to mid-field. Here Ormonde got in a great kick, but the wind carried the ball back. The vagaries which the elements were playing with the flight of the leather were most disconcerting to the players, but Bohs always had the better of this, and Lock had to stop a great shot from Willitts which McDonnell tried to improve on by pushing the Scottish keeper into the net, an operation which failed. And the Bohemian got hurt, causing a slight cessation. On restarting Bohs swarmed down again, and Hannon just sent wide. The goal kick left play at centre, Hendry crossing to Goodwin, who in turn passed to Smith, who struck the post with a great shot. The game was working up and down quickly now, and after Lock had saved from West, Hehir had to exert himself to get rid of a hot one from Paterson. A corner to Bohs followed, Lock clearing well from Hannon, and Smith came back strongly, Irons just clearing at the expense of a corner which Brennan cleared. The pace was kept strong, and Seymour made a fine run on the wing, but the pass was too forwards for McDonnell to get there. Rangers now attacked with great determination, and Smith, on the left wing, was seen to advantage some of his shots giving Hehir a lot of trouble, and then a huge kick of McConnell’s changed the scene. From a tough throw at centre Hannon made a good pass to West, who sent out to Willitts, but the wind again spoiled the move. A free to Bohs was well taken by McConnell, whose shot was just a couple of inches short of the mark. Galt worked back, and aided by a free another Rangers attack was opened on the home goal, Irons just stopping Paterson in time, but McConnell nearly made a bad mistake in the next minute, Heney just retrieving before any disaster occurred. Bohs again resumed the attack, and Hannon should have scored but delayed too long. The Rangers left wing was again prominent, and making a fine run just failed to beat McConnell, who cleared to midfield, where Bohs aided by a free got to striking Rangers, but West was too slow and a palpable chance was lost. So far the Scotsmen were giving a grand exhibition against the wind, but their shooting suffered, and consequence whereas Bohs, failed completely to take full advantage of the help. A good shot from Willitts was well saved by Lock, who dropped the ball, and McDonnell just failed to take advantage of the mistake. A corner to Rangers was well cleared, and then a free to Bohs, for hands transferred to the other end, McConnell sending a great drive to Lock, which he cleared well. He was called again inside a minute, and the period ran out, with a hot attack of the visitors, Reid scoring an easy goal after Irons made a bad mistake. Half-time :- Glasgow Rangers 1 goal; Bohemians nil. After a short interval McDonnell re-started, and play was waged at centre for a minute, Brennan eventually opening out to West, who took the ball well up, but McDonnell was too well watched to do anything with a good pass, and Campbell cleared. Bohs were now trying hard for the equaliser, but could not do so and Rangers were soon attacking, a good cross by Reid being placed to account by Paterson for Rangers’ second score, after a few minutes play the visitors tried to repeat this performance inside the minute, but Reid sending out gave relief. Bohemians defence did well now and Irons transferred, Brennan making a nice opening which West made a great effort to improve on, and struck the bar with a fine shot. Continuing the pressure the homesters were doing well, and McDonnell, Willitts and West each had shots, but they all failed and with the ball eventually going out spoiled further efforts. The goal kick let Rangers away, and a corner resulted. The flag kick was cleared at the expense of another, but this time the wind took the ball out. The kick was well followed up, and the home forwards again got busy, and Lock had an anxious few minutes. He brought off a couple of great saves, notably one from McDonnell with one hand. Bohs maintained the pressure for some minutes longer, a bad finish alone spoiling. Rangers were soon attacking again, and Paterson and Reid had a couple of good shots, from the former of which Hehir brought off a great save. Rangers, however, were not exerting themselves to any great extent now, and though a couple of corners came their way, the score remained unchanged, mainly through the wind carrying the ball out time after time. Smith tried several long shots, and two of them gave Hehir a lot of trouble, but he cleared well. A corner to Rangers followed, Irons clearing a well-placed flag kick, and play was at centre for minute or so. Brennan eventually made an opening for West, but Campbell stopped the move and smith whipping up a good open from Galt soon had his side again attacking. His final effort was a beauty, and Hehir gathered the leather well, but got hurt, and a slight stoppage ensured. On resuming Heney sent McDonnell away, but he made poor use of the chance, and Ormonde putted out again to Smith, who almost rolled clean through. Rangers were now monopolising the play. A couple of burst by Bohs proved nothing, as the home forwards usually fumbled. Hands against Ormonde gave much needed relief, and them the wind took a high kick of McConnell’s out for a corner, which failed to materialise. Irons was to the front with a well-placed punt, and Willitts got away alone, only to be stopped by Campbell before he could extract a pass. Rangers got busy again; hover, Smith going off-side gave relief. Rangers continued the pressure, and as time advanced were all over the home lot, but no score resulted. Result :- Glasgow Rangers 2; Bohemians nil.
