Match Trivia

This match took place yesterday at Dalymount Park, before a fine holiday crowd. The Rangers won the toss, and Graves started the game, the opening play going in favour of Rangers, who indulged in nice passing. A rush was made by Graves, but Jones was too eager, Livingstone was not far from the mark with a fine effort. Then the Bohemians’ put on stiff pressure and gained two corners, from the last one Ampleford giving Newbigging a warm handful, which the latter got rid of smartly. A really fine piece of work was shown by the home team, Hooper centring finely, and Graves drawing forth applause by a shot which grazes the upright. The outside right left the field, and though shorthanded, the Rangers were first to open the scoring, a nice shot from May finding the net. Dickie again came on the field, and with their full complement, of men the visitors gave a glimpse of bright football, though the wind was a great factor in the proceeding, and Dickie was wide with a shot. Then a grand effort was put in Kivlichan, and it was well for Reynolds the ball hit the crossbar. A rush was made by the Rangers, and though Reynolds rushed out to save, Livingstone succeeded in heading the ball into the net for the second goal. The subsequent play went greatly in favour of the Rangers, and had they been as expect in shooting as controlling the ball, a few more goals would have been registered to their credit. On a few occasions the Bohemians got away, Jones giving some good passes to Sloan, but the tackling of the Rangers was superb, and the home team were not enabled to make much progress. The Rangers gained a corner, which was badly placed, and Sloan and Jones getting away, good combination was shown by the two, and eventually Newbigging had to gather a slow shot. No further scoring took place, and the interval arrived with the score – Rangers 2; Bohemians 0. The teams immediately turned over, and the Rangers were at once prominent, a fine centre from Smith being turned over the bar by Livingstone. McElhinney had a long shot at goal, but Newbigging easily cleared. The Bohemians then had a turn, and when two yards away from the goal Sloan failed lamentably. However, the Bohemians made some amends later by sending across a magnificent centre, which was headed in by Bastow, but nothing short of a red hot cannon ball could beat Newbigging. Some good combination was indulged in by the Rangers, though through over-indulgence in this fascinating art, goals were lost. The game was interesting if only to watch the different methods of the teams. A rush down by Bohemians resulted in a magnificent shot from Ampleford being cleverly saved by Newbigging, who parried the ball with one hand, and then kicked to touch. Bohemians gained a corner, but Sloan’s kick was a bad one, and the ball was got away. The next item of intrest was a single-handed run by Kivlichan, who, although tackled by Balfe and Reynolds, at the finish managed to roll the ball through for the third goal. On the resumption, fancy work was indulged in by the Rangers’ right wing, but McElhinney put a stop to this by tackling in great style, and the latter opened up the game for his side. However, the opposing defence was not to be beaten, and they kept the home team out on every occasion. A chance was presented to Graves, but he was too slow to take advantage of it. When the Bohemians were attacking a penalty ought to have been given against Campbell for handling the ball, but the referee failed to see it. However, for bringing down Graves this was given directly afterwards, and R Hooper scored with a good shot. The final whistle soon afterwards went, the result being :- Rangers 3; Bohemians 1
