Match Trivia

Blackburn Rovers had Glasgow Rangers as visitors to Ewood Park, for their Christmas Day engagement, and in the presence of £15,000 they won a most interesting game by four goals to one. With the exception of the substitution of Wilson for Wolstenholme, the Blue-and-white were at full strength, whilst the Rangers had a strong side. At the outset the visitors played the smarter football, but apart from two shots by Gray and Stark, in the half-line, they were certainly weak in front of goal. Shaw had a bad habit of lying off-side, and consequently his efforts were futile, but as a whole the forwards shot weakly. On the other hand, the Rovers played a strong defensive game. Crompton and Cowell together with the halves, fed their forwards in praiseworthy fashion, and at the end of nine minutes, Robertson scored a fine goal from Chadwick centre. The balance of play continued in favour of the Rovers, and Davies got a second point as a result of one of his characteristic dashes, whilst before the interval. Whittaker added a third goal following upon a commendable shot by Wilson, who did some really neat work at centre-half. The second half was more even and the Rangers improved in their shooting to such an extent as to give Evans a busy time. The Welshman, however, was equal to some really brilliant attempts and only from a well-placed corner kick by Shaw was beaten by Spiers. Davies followed this reverse by adding a fourth goal for the Rovers. The Rovers were undoubtedly the better team. They played with considerable dash, and after the opening never looked like being the losing side. In the following line Davies was clever and effective, whilst Robertson fed his partner in pretty fashion. Whittaker was not at his best, but on the opposite wing Chadwick worked hard and successfully though he was given full amount of support Smith, who continued to fill Bowman’s place. Bradshaw was the pick of a moderate half-back, but Wilson was a trifle too slow, and Moir had a strong wing to face in Kyle and Smith. The rearguard was always sound Evans particularly covering himself with glory. The Rangers have several good men, the best players on the side being Gray, the right-half, and Walker and Craig at full back. The forwards did not come up to expectation, Hamilton the centre, showing little effective work. The display of the Rovers was very satisfactory, and suggested a hard fight being made against North End today. Result – Rovers 4; Glasgow Rangers 1
